Hughesville girls pull away from Southern and win third straight
Hughesville turned up the defense after a slow start and limited Southern Columbia to 23 points over the final three quarters, defeating the Tigers, 58-39. The Spartans remained undefeated in the HAC-II and turned a three-point second quarter deficit into an eight-point halftime lead with a 15-4 run. Maddie Smith scored a game-high 19 points and Vivian Draper had 13. Kendall Hamm hit two fourth quarter 3-pointers and scored eight. Kylie Temple led a strong effort at the foul line for Hughesville (14-2, 6-0), going 6 for 6 there.
Mount Carmel made a statement, rallying from a nine-point halftime deficit and defeating defending 3A state champion Loyalsock, 43-42 in overtime. Alaina Dadzie scored 19 points, had 10 rebounds and made six steals for Loyalsock (9-5, 4-2 HAC-III) but Mount Carmel (12-5, 4-2) outworked the Lancers and controlled the second half. Madison Perry scored nine points for Loyalsock and Jillian Kennedy six in her first game since the season opener. Jaekairah Harden also had six points.
Carly Quimby scored 11 points and South Williamsport played swarming defense, defeating Millville, 34-20. Quimby also hit three of the team’s six 3-pointers. Ivy Minier added two and South (8-7) did not allow more than six points in a quarter. The Mounties built a 20-8 halftime lead and outscored Millville in all four quarters.
Lewisburg produced a tremendous comeback, erasing a 14-point halftime deficit at Mifflinburg and winning, 36-28. The Green Dragons (6-9, 3-3 HAC-II) outscored Mifflinburg, 28-6 in the second half. The closed on a 15-2 run and Addy Shedleski and Teagan Osunde went 9 of 11 at the line there. Osunde scored a game-high 16 points, adding eight steals and seven rebounds. Lauren Schwartz grabbed 10 rebounds and made six steals, while Shedleski scored nine points.
Ansley Baldwin scored a career-high 26 points and Eva Fresno poured in 21 as Sullivan County played its best offensive game this season, defeating Montgomery, 58-32. Baldwin scored 16 second-half points to help the Griffins (7-9) break open the game and Fresno set the early tone with nine first-quarter points.
Carrie King had a big game at undefeated Central Columbia, scoring a game-high 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a 49-33 loss. King drained five 3-pointers, including one which drew Milton within 37-29 with 4 ½ minutes remaining. Liz Schrock had six rebounds and four blocks for Milton (7-7, 3-1 HAC-II) and Quinlan Blake scored 19 for Central (15-0, 5-0).
Aiden McKee collected his 10th double-double and hit two clutch free throws later, helping Warrior Run edge Bloomburg, 51-48. The Defenders (15-1, 6-0 HAC-III) survived a scare, rallying from a four-point halftime deficit and fourth quarter deficit. McKee had 14 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, while moving within a rebound of No. 1,000 for his career. Landon Polcyn also scored 14 points, and James Keifer had nine points with eight steals. Ethan Balzer added nine points.
Landon Mattern scored a career-high 15 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, helping North Penn-Liberty rally past Wellsboro, 42-37. The defending District 4 Class A champions outscored Wellsboro, 13-4 in the fourth when Lewis went 4 for 4 at the foul line. Luke Kreger scored 14 points, and Conner Lewis grabbed 11 rebounds, producing at least 10 for a seventh straight game. Brody Grinnell added five steals for the Mounties (10-5). Colin Fletcher scored 16 points, including 11 in the third quarter when Wellsboro took the lead.
Andy Hermansen scored a game-high 17 points, but Northeast Bradford scored at will throughout the final three quarters, defeating North Penn-Mansfield, 77-43. Four players scored in double figures for NEB (12-2) and the Panthers drained 11 3-pointers.
