Neumann grad Parlante’s double-double lifts Penn College women

Penn College knocked off Penn State Harrisburg, 67-54, in a United East women’s basketball contest on Saturday afternoon inside Bardo Gym. The win was the first for the Wildcats in the series in the NCAA-era (1-10) and improved their record to 5-1 in the conference, 13-5 overall. The Lions fell to 4-3 UEC, 5-13.

St. John Neumann graduate Gigi Parlante and Kayla Herzer both posted double-doubles as Parlante scored nine points in the second half to finish with 14 and 10 boards, Herzer posted a 10 and 10 day. Breana Valentine led all scorers with 21 points and dished out six assists, and Loyalsock graduate Mia Patterson also finished in double-digit scoring with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals.

A hot start from the jump gave the Wildcats all the momentum through 40 minutes. Patterson knocked down seven of the first nine points for the Wildcats and a RaeAnna Andreas layup at 4:42 gave Penn College an 11-5 lead. Herzer knocked down a pair of mid-range jumpers to give the Wildcats a 21-13 lead after the first quarter.

Kenni Galbreath nailed a three to start the second quarter and Patterson stretched the lead to 10 (26-16) with another bucket with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Penn College never let its lead slip as the Wildcats held a 37-26 lead and kept the pace up through the second half.

The Wildcats limited Harrisburg to 33% shooting (19 for 57) and forced 19 turnovers

Penn College travels to Lancaster Bible for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday.
