A BIG DIEHL: Logan Diehl has highest D4 finish for Muncy swimmer in 46 years

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Muncy's Logan Diehl checks his time after competing in the boys 200 Freestyle during the District 4 Championship meet at Williamsport on Wednesday.

It’s been a long time since Muncy saw a swimmer in one of the top two spots on the podium. Forty-five years to be precise. That’s when Marci Wallis ended her career at Muncy as a five-time District 4 swimming champion when she graduated in 1981.

On Wednesday, Logan Diehl etched his name in elite company at Muncy when it came to swimming. While he didn’t claim goal, Diehl took home a silver medal, the highest finish for a Muncy swimmer at districts since Wallis in 1981.

“It feels pretty good. I was originally in fourth place. It’s really a lot about school pride too,” Diehl said. “I don’t have a team, my team’s just me. So it really means a lot to me.”

For the past few years, Diehl has been Muncy’s lone swimmer, competing independently and representing his team at numerous duals, tri-meets and invitationals. It all culminated his senior year with Wednesday’s second-place finish in the boys 200 free.

Diehl swam great throughout the race and touched the wall in 1:53.34. He was behind only Lewisburg standout Colin Shannon, who won district gold with a time of 1:49.67.

“I was very happy. My second 50 I could have gone a little faster there, my flip turns could have been a little better, but overall, very happy with my race,” Diehl said.

His time of 1:53.34 was a PR as well.

“I’ve never done that before,” Diehl said with a laugh about the PR.

Competing against Shannon, Bloomsburg’s Bobby Nenstiel and Athens’ Jacob Shores helped fuel Diehl in the race. It was also extra nice for the Muncy standout as Diehl had previously lost to Nensteil and Shores in competition. On Wednesday, he got the better of them both.

“They push me a lot. The kid next to me he’s from Bloomsburg (Nenstiel). He’s beaten me before a few times,” Diehl said. “It really pushed me to beat him and also the kid from Athens (Shores) who’s also beat me before too.”

For Diehl, he was happy as well to stand at the top of the podium and represent Muncy as he received his medal.

“I have a lot of pride,” Diehl said as his silver medal hung from his neck. “Not many people at my school have done this before, so it means a lot to be one of the few people in my school to do this.”

Hughesville’s Luke Siperko, a junior, swam a time of 25.41 in the boys 50 free in the first of three heats. Milton’s Morgan Cohoon swam a 1:06.84 for fifth in the girls 100 fly while Hughesville junior Ashlynn Barlett was sixth with a time of 1:08.85.

Only the top four finishers in each event received medals. The district champions advance to states and anyone who swims a state-qualifying mark in their respective events.

Milton’s Julia Stahlnecker, Rachel Goocey, Cohoon and Larissa Rovenolt took fourth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:59.34 and that same foursome swam a 1:47.08 to take fourth in the 200 free relay. Bloomsburg’s Lucy Diehl, Anna Yancoskie, Jordyn Maloney and Samantha Fagan claimed titles in both relays.

The Black Panthers’ Nolan Scheller was the program’s only winner on Wednesday as he swam a 21.72 to claim a district championship in the 50 free event, beating out Athens’ Eli Hicks (22.20), Central Columbia’s Calvin Kehres (25.35) and Wellsboro’s Matthew Robbins (24.11), who took second through fourth, respectively.

In the girls 200 IM, Goocey of Milton took fifth in 2:25.58, Wellsboro’s Makenna Robbins was sixth in 2:25.75 and Lewisburg’s Jillian Muchler finished seventh in 2:26.93.

Rovenolt of Milton swam a 26.28 for fifth in the 50 free and North Penn-Liberty senior Nora Furry was seventh (27.99) in the 50 free. Milton’s Mason Cohoon swam a 1:00.33 in the 100 fly and was less than a second from taking fifth in the event.

Wellsboro’s Makenna Robbins, Kristina Belz, Joelle Bull and Piper Anderegg swam a time of 1:51.73 to take sixth in the girls 200 free relay event, just three seconds behind Jersey Shore’s team which took fifth with Brooke Charney, Sierra Derr, Lila Nestlerode and Emily Shemory.

Milton’s Andrew Leinbach, Silas Godown, Mason Cohoon and Scheller took sixth in the boys 200 free relay in 1:42.10 while Wellsboro’s Maxwell Mascho, Wyatt Sporer, Austin DeShazo and Matthew Robbins swam a1:41.78 for fifth place.
