Bassett picks up win No. 100 as Lock Haven wrestling beats Edinboro
EDINBORO — Avery Bassett won his 100th-career match in the Lock Haven men’s wrestling team’s 18-12 Mid-American Conference victory on the road at Edinboro on Thursday night.
With the victory, Lock Haven improved to 12-4 overall and 5-1 in the MAC, after picking up its 10th win in the previous 11 matches.
Edinboro falls to 5-6 on the season and 2-2 in the conference.
After dropping the opener at 125 pounds, the Bald Eagles surged ahead with victories in three of the next four bouts. Gable Strickland got Lock Haven on the board with a 2-0 decision over Landon Bainey at 133, and No. 24 Wyatt Henson followed with a strong 11-5 win at 141.
At 157, Nick Stampoulos edged Garrett McChesney, 4-3, to cap a stretch that also included Bassett’s 9-4 victory at 174 and a dominant technical fall from Sam Gautreau at 184. Gautreau sealed a 21-5 win midway through the second period at 6:15.
The decision for Bassett was victory number 100 for his career and team-leading 100th on the season.
Tucker Hogan added a 6-2 decision at 197 to close out the Lock Haven scoring and seal the victory.
Edinboro’s wins came at 125, 149, 165, and heavyweight.
Lock Haven lost a pair of team points from mat control at 141 and 157 pounds.
The Bald Eagles are set to return to action on Sunday, Feb. 15 at home when they host the Lock Haven Open II Tournament. Action is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. in Thomas Fieldhouse. Brackets and a live result link will be available at LockHavenAthletics.com for the day’s action.
