Boozer having a great freshman season with Muncy

Chase Boozer is just a freshman, but he’s already making an impact on the mat. That’s been evident all year as he’s been vital to Muncy’s dual meet success. The Indian is 39-3 after the District 4 Class AA championships and is heading to the regional tournament.
And, so far, all Boozer knows is postseason gold.
The Muncy freshman 139-pounder won Central Sectional gold two weeks ago and on Saturday he was once again at the top of the podium thanks to winning a District 4 gold medal.
“It’s amazing. Coming in and winning all these tournaments? It’s pretty cool,” Boozer said with a smile.
Boozer once again ran into Bloomsburg’s Anthony Barra for the title, the same as he did a week ago. Last week, Barra hung with Boozer for all six minutes as Boozer escaped with a 6-0 decision victory. But at districts, it couldn’t have been a more different match.
Boozer scored a takedown 11 seconds into the match before Barra had an escape and takedown with 52 seconds to go. Boozer escaped to tie it up at 4-4.
But the rest of the match remained Boozer’s to dominate.
After a stoppage for injury, Boozer had a takedown with 34 seconds left and four nearfall points to close out the period. In the second period, Boozer escaped the start 12 seconds in, had a takedown three seconds later and then had a flurry of three points on a nearfall and four points on a nearfall in a six-second span.
Add that together, and it was a dominating 22-4, 2:37 tech fall win for Boozer over Barra.
“The kid I wrestled, he’s a great athlete and a good wrestler. Coming here and tech’ing him is something unreal,” Boozer said. “I never thought it would happen, but it did and it’s pretty cool.”
Facing Barra for a second straight week was something that benefitted Boozer as he learned from last week’s sectional tournament what he had to do.
“I knew I had to stay on my offense and put pressure on top, turn on top and work on top and just work on my offense,” Boozer said.
At districts, Boozer went 3-0 with two tech fall wins and a second-period pin. He beat Montgomery standout AJ Kroft in the quarterfinals with an 18-0, 4:39 tech fall before pinning Towanda’s Hagen Jones with six seconds left in the second period to reach the championship finals against Barra.
Boozer has been wrestling at a high level all year. He has 26 wins by fall this year and another five by tech fall.
“37-3 I think is a pretty cool record for a freshman, so I’m more than happy with it,” Boozer said.
The Muncy standout is the second-highest ranked wrestler in District 4 at 139 pounds. The freshman is ranked No. 7 in the state and the only wrestler in the district ahead of him in the rankings is Mifflinburg senior Ben Straub, who is ranked No. 4. Boozer and Straub have not met up this year, but a matchup between the two top-10 ranked wrestlers could happen if things shake out right at regionals.
Boozer’s losses this year were to Bishop McCort’s Jax Forrest (21-4, 1:37), Cranberry’s Dalton Wenner (7-6) and Bentworth’s Drake McClure.
All three of those wrestlers are returning state medalists as well. Forest is a returning state champion, Wenner is a returning PIAA Class AA seventh-place medalist and McClure is a returning PIAA Class AA eighth-place medalist.
It’s an outstanding resume for a freshman for sure.
“I think I’ve improved a ton with wrestling all the partners I get to wrestle every day and all week,” Boozer said. “I think I really improved overall as a freshman coming in and winning all these (tournaments and matches).”
Now, Boozer is set for the Northeast Class AA Regional tournament and will have some tough opponents to face, but Boozer is ready for the challenge ahead.
“Just going in there and working hard and hopefully winning that too,” Boozer said.
