Local roundup: Eyer’s double-double propels Muncy girls over rival Montgomery

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Muncy's Ava Eyer (5) drives around Montgomery's Miranda Staggert (4) in the fourth quarter.

Ava Eyer collected a double-double, going for 14 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals and Muncy completed its second straight undefeated Mid-Penn regular season, defeating Montgomery, 47-7. The Indians (19-1, 8-0) built a 27-3 halftime lead and six players pulled down at least five rebounds, including reserves Abby Neidermyer and Hailey Ganoe who had six each.

Anna Zalonis went for seven points and five rebounds, while Rosie Zalonis and Emma McCormick both had three steals. The Indians will play Northwest next Saturday at Neumann for the Mid-Penn Conference championship.

Avery Reibsome was Mifflinburg’s lone double-digit scorer as she had 17 points to propel Mifflinburg to a 40-27 win over Milton. Parice Shuck scored nine. Mia Reibsome added eight. The Black Panthers were led by Liz Schrock’s 10 points and 12 rebounds. Carrie King of the Black Panthers added 12 boards.

• Ethan Balzer scored 24 points and Clayton Skokoski drained four 3-pointers during a second-quarter binge as Warrior Run won its 20th game, defeating Central Columbia, 64-38. Skokoski’s 12 points in the second helped the Defenders (20-1) built a 12-point halftime lead. James Keifer added 10 points as Warrior Run won its 13th straight game and reached 20 regular season wins for the first time in the 2000s.

Five players scored in double figures as North Penn-Liberty eclipsed 80 points in an 81-55 win against Canton. Evan McTish had a monster night with 22 points, Conner Lewis scored 15, Landon mattern and Brody Grinnell scored 13 apiece and Luke Kreger chipped in 11.

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Muncy's Rosie Zalonis (3) tries to drive between Montgomery's Addy Brown (20) and Gabriella Hill (55).

Canton was led by Monte Whitehead’s 17 points, Ryder ROute’s 15 and Drew Holton’s 10.

Cowanesque Valley cruised past Williamson, 69-31. The Indians trailed Williamson by one, 13-12, after the first quarter, but pulled away and took the lead thanks to a 25-point second quarter. Cowanesque Valley’s Levi Stahli scored 18 points, Trevin Hollenback scored 11 and Josh Teague, Jacob Johnson and Ashtyn Burdick all scored nine each.

Wellsboro defeated Towanda, 46-29. Kody Enck scord 12 for the Green Hornets and Lane Cozby, James Doughtie and Braylen Jessup each chipped in eight.

• In girls wrestling, Williamsport lost to Mifflinburg, 35-35, via criteria. Malaina Comfort won at 100 with a 59-second pin over Lillian Frederick. At 106, Danica Bacorn dominated Ava Pfleegor, winning by tech fall, 19-2, 4:28. Williamsport’s Mia Davis won at 190 with a fal in 2:42 over Lydia Miller.

Shikellamy defeated Hughesville, 42-34. Hughesville’s Avery Earnest secured a 59-second pin against Isabella Marlow at 142 pounds and at 148, Caroline Hicks of Hughesville picked up a pin in the second period vs. Danielle Bottinger in 3:04.

20, 21, 12 MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Muncy's Abby Niedermyer (20) tries to drive between Montgomery's Addy Brown (20) and Madie Hamm (12) in the fourth quarter.

The Spartans’ Jaysa Kiess won at 112 with a 1:52 pin over Lilly Poff and at 118, Ariahna Moore pinned Skyler Wiest in 4:18.

Wellsboro defeated Muncy, 36-9. Wellsboro’s Kaelyn Peterson pinned Adelynn Holmes in 32 seconds at 130 and Katherine Whitney pinned Lilliam Kramer at 136 in 2:21. Wellsboro’s Phoebe Bowen secured a 60-second pin at 190 against Muncy’s Paige Dunham-Lester.

Muncy’s Zoe Kunkle picked up a decision, 14-12, at 124 over Rosa Sguera.

• Peter Grandolfo scored four goals, including three in a row to break open a tight game in the third quarter, and the Bucknell defense turned in its stingiest defensive effort in 12 years in an 11-2 win over St. Bonaventure on Friday afternoon at snowy Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Now 2-0 on the season, the Bison earned the 400th win in team history, which dates back to 1968.

Jaz Zanelli made seven saves and the Bison forced 22 turnovers on the way to its lowest goals-against total since a 13-1 win over Lafayette on Apr. 11, 2014. It was the 30th time in team history, spanning 757 games, that Bucknell allowed two goals or fewer.

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Muncy's Ava Eyer (5) shoots over Montgomery's Maddie Hamm (12) in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Sean Murray had a big day with a goal and three assists, and his first collegiate tally gave Bucknell a 3-0 lead with 2:28 left in the first quarter. The Bison hit a lull offensively, however, as both teams had trouble protecting the ball with a light snow falling throughout much of the day.
