Local roundup: Nixon’s career-high 24 points helps Neumann beat Montgomery 56-38
Bre Nixon scored 20 of her career-high 24 points over the final three quarters and St. John Neumann rallied from a second quarter deficit to defeat Montgomery, 56-38. The Knights dressed only six players and one fouled out, but they outscored Montgomery, 33-18 in the second half. Nixon finished strong with 10 fourth quarter points and Kallee Johnson added 13 and Kaydance Meixel 10. Rihanna Arrendondo scored a career-best 15 for Montgomery and Aubrey Hamm had eight.
Alaina Dadzie scored 32 points in three quarters and Loyalsock dominated the first half as it routed Bloomsburg, 51-19 on the road. The Lancers (13-6, 7-3 HAC-III) built a 20-4 first quarter lead, pushed it to 23 by halftime and won their second straight. Dadzie scored 21 first-half points and added seven rebounds. Jaekairah Harden had 11 points and four steals and Madison Perry five points with four assists and four steals.
Emma McCormick scored a career-high 16 points, while producing seven rebounds and four steals, helping Muncy defeat Bucktail, 50-24. Ava Eyer scored 15 points and Alexis McKeta filled the stat sheet with seven rebounds, seven assists and six steals as Muncy (17-1) won its seventh straight game and snapped Bucktail’s three-game winning streak. Anna Zalonis had eight points and six rebounds and Rosie Zalonis seven assists. Kendall Wagner scored 13 for Bucktail (11-8).
Hughesville played strong defense and limited surging Mount Carmel to eight field goals, closing out its HAC-III season undefeated with a 41-24 win on the road. Maddie Smith scored 16 points and Vivian Draper. The Spartans (18-2, 10-0) used a 15-6 second quarter run to build a 10-point halftime lead and finished strong with a 14-7 flurry in the fourth.
Haley Litzelman became North Penn-Liberty’s all-time leading girls’ scorer, collecting her 15th double-double with 30 points and 12 rebounds in a 40-34 loss against Williamson. Litzelman needed seven points to break the record and now has 1,277. She also made seven steals and blocked three shots. Freshman Serena Boiywo added 11 rebounds. Bailey Snyder scored 17 points for Williamson and Olivia Nolan 14.
Carrie King scored 25 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and made five steals as Milton won its third game in four nights, defeating Shamokin, 59-39. Hayden Snyder scored a career-high 16 points and the Black Panthers (10-8, 5-2 HAC-II) built a 35-17 halftime lead. Liz Schrock added nine points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
Three players reached double figures, helping power Cowanesque Valley to a 46-18 win at Sayre. Jaylynn Anderson and Starr Ordway each scored 11 and Addy Lanzo added 10. The Indians broke things open with a 16-5 third quarter run, building a 20-point lead.
Kameron Lightner generated her 15th double-double, going for 10 points and 18 rebounds in North Penn-Mansfield’s 25-23 loss against Athens. Julia Kaczynski and Elaina Shaw both had 11 rebounds for the Tigers (11-8). North Penn-Mansfield struggled at the foul line, going 5 of 19.
Teagan Osunde scored 10 points and Lauren Schwartz grabbed 10 rebounds for Lewisburg in its 64-34 loss at undefeated Central Columbia. Quinlan Blake scored 21 points for the Blue Jays and Abby Welkom added 16 as they improved to 20-0.
Sullivan County played outstanding defense and Eva Fresno scored 13 points but Sullivan County struggled to get its offense going in a 22-18 loss against Northumberland Christian.
Kya Lawton scored eight points for Wellsboro and Kate Bryant six but Wyalusing erupted for 44 points in the middle quarters and defeated Wellsboro, 62-21. Four players score in double figures for Wyalusing.
• The Sullivan County boys kept grinding despite playing their fourth game in five nights, defeating Northumberland Christian, 43-32 for their sixth straight win. Lucas King scored 15 points and Colin King had 10, along with eight rebounds and seven steals. Tucker Blasi scored eight points with four assists and Sullivan allowed just 18 points in the first three quarters.
• In unified bocce, Muncy beat Mifflnburg’s 1 team, 8-5, and Mifflinburg’s 2 team, 10-5, for a sweep.
Jersey Shore and Williamsport competed as well.
The Williamsport 1 team beat Jersey Shore’s 1 team, 6-4, and lost to Jersey Shore’s 2 team, 6-4. Jersey Shore’s 1 team beat Williamsport’s 2 team, 9-2. Williamsport’s 2 team beat Jersey Shore’s 2 team, 9-1.
In the Heartland West standings, Warrior Run ended as the No. 1 seed with a 1-4 record. Mifflinburg’s 2 team and shares the No. 2 seed with a 7-3 record, Central Mountain went 7-3 to secure the No. 2 seed as well. Jersey Shore’s No. 1 team is the fourth seed (6-3) and Williamsport’s No. 1 team is the fifth seed. Jersey Shore’s No. 2 team is the sixth seed and South Williamsport’s No. 2 team is the seventh seed.
The Heartland West league championships are scheduled for Feb. 26 at 3:30 p.m. at Jersey Shore. The Heartland East league championships are Feb. 24 at 3:30 p.m. at Central Columbia and the NTL league championships are Feb. 23 at 3:30 p.m. at Williamson.
The Heartland East and Heartland West champion and runners-up advance to the regional tournament in State College on March 3, as does the Northern Tier champion. The state tournament is scheduled for March 18-19 in Hershey and the top eight total teams qualify for the state tournament.
• Hughesville suffered a 51-17 loss in boys wrestling action on Tuesday. Landon Puderbach of Hughesville had a pin in the first period at 152 pounds over Keaton Brokenshire in 1:48. At 172, Kile Hartman secured a 16-1 tech fall win against Brady Thomas.
At 285, Colton Woolever of Hughesville pinned Mark Brown in 1:56.
