JOHNSTOWN — Montgomery knew entering Friday’s PIAA Class AA Duals quarterfinals against Bishop McCort that it would be a tough contest.

Bishop McCort has a lineup which features ten wrestlers ranked in the state, including two who are No. 1 — Bo Bassett at 145 pounds and Melvin Miller at 160 — and No. 2 Caleb Rodriguez at 285. In the end, matchups didn’t fall in the Red Raiders’ favor as Bishop McCort handed Montgomery a 61-12 loss, the first loss of the season in duals competition for the Red Raiders.

The Red Raiders are back in action on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in the consolation round against Saucon Valley, a 42-29 loser against Chestnut Ridge. Saucon Valley beat Montoursville in the first round of the duals tournament on Tuesday. Chestnut Valley advances in the championship semifinals and faces Bishop McCort.

Montgomery won just one contested matchup, doing so at 127. It was there where Carden Wagner competed against Jamison Forrest in a matchup of two top-20 ranked wrestlers. Wagner is ranked No. 18 and Forrest is No. 14.

Wagner had two first-period takedowns for an early 6-1 lead heading into the second period. In that second period however, Forrest wrestled strong and after an escape 15 seconds in, got control of Wagner and had a takedown to cut the deficit to 6-5. And, with 13 seconds left, Forrestt scored four big points on a nearfall before a reversal by Wagner gave Forrest a 9-8 lead. However Wagner would win as after his reversal, Forrest had to end the match via injury, giving Wagner a win in 3:50 for six points.

Bishop McCort won via forfeits at 145 and 152 — as an anticipated matchup between No. 1 Bo Bassett and No. 2 Brandt Harer didn’t occur. That hyped matchup instead will have to wait until the state finals in a few week.

At 160, Josh Knoebel wrestled against No. 5 Jackson Butler and fell via tech fall, 17-2, 1:50. Raiden Felix lost by tech fall at 172 to No. 1 Miller, 21-6, 3:04.

The Bishop McCort standout never stopped being aggressive and had a total of six takedowns in the first period for an 18-5 lead going into the second. Felix had an escape 13 seconds into the second period, but with 57 seconds left, Miller had one last takedown to secure the tech fall victory.
