Nine local wrestlers claim North Sectional gold medals
ATHENS — A total of nine local wrestlers claimed gold medals at the North Sectional tournament with another six finishing as runners up to advance to the District 4 championships on Saturday at WIlliamsport.
North Penn-Liberty’s Bodhi Nickerson won by major decision at 107 pounds with a 15-6 win over Levi Vermilya, 15-1. At 121, Liberty’s Bryce Pequignot earned a 17-2, 1:27 tech fall win against Towanda’s Braydon Fessenden.
Williamson’s Zander Wilson picked up a 10-5 decision win over Wyalusing’s Isaiah Harvey, 10-5. Wilson pinned Sullivan County’s Luca Zelewicz in the semifinals in 42 seconds to secure a trip back to the district tournament.
At 127, Williamson’s Hunter Simonds pinned Keagan Kerr of Troy in 36 seconds and, one bout later, Sullivan County’s Andrew Kapec pinned Wyalusing’s Cole Patrick in 1:24 to win gold.
Canton’s Carson Rockwell secured a 2-0 win over Towanda’s Reese Sluyter to win the title at 160 in a tight contest. A key reversal with a minute to go in the second period gave Rockwell a 2-0 lead and he prevented Sluyter from scoring any points to rally through the final three minutes.
Wellsboro’s Hayden Stevens won the title at 215with a 7-0 decision against Wyalusing’s Daniel Fox. Stevens majored both his opponents en route to the final by beating Towanda’s Finn Brennan, 10-1, in the quarterfinals and Williamson’s Riley Rall, 10-1, in the semifinals.
At 285, Williamson’s Luke Sottolano went 2-0 after having a quarterfinal bye and won both bouts by pin to secure gold. In the semifinals, Sottolano pinned Towanda’s Dom Miller in 48 seconds. In the final, the Williamson heavyweight led 3-0 over Sullivan County’s Carter Reis before securing a pin with just five seconds left in the first period.
Sullivan County’s Wyatt Bagley suffered a 17-2 major decision loss against Towanda’s Hagen Jones in the 139 final.
At 145, Canton’s Tommy Preston had two convincing wins in the quarterfins and semifinals before suffering a loss in the 145 final to Towanda’s Gage Evans by decision, 2-0, to take silver. Preston pinned Williamson’s Ryder Dacheux by tech fall, 15-0, 3:16 in the quarters and secured a 1:28 fall over Troy’s Logunn Heasley in the semifinals.
Blane Wesneski of Canton lost by major decision in the 172 finals to Sayre’s Jordan Brown.
