Eckerson, Engel lead Lycoming against King’s in softball

WILKES-BARRE — Senior Alex Eckerson and freshman Isabelle Engel, a Jersey Shore graduate, each had three hits and a double to lead the Lycoming College softball team, which fell to King’s College, 4-1 and 2-1, in non-conference action at Betzler Field on Thursday afternoon.

In the second game, Lycoming (4-8) led until the fifth inning when Megan Matsko drove in two with a double for King’s (8-12). Freshman Sage Smeltz (3-1) allowed five hits and two runs in five innings, striking out two.

The Warriors took the lead in the second inning when Eckerson doubled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Serenity Snyder.

Eckerson was 1 for 3 with a double and a run and both senior Hailee Sobieski and Engel had two hits in the game.

Madisyn vonFrisch (3-7) pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out two for the Monarchs. Breanna Goldspiel went 2 for 3 with a run.

In the first game, sophomore Ashley Forrest and Eckerson each had two hits to lead the team, as King’s used two second-inning runs in a 4-1 win.

Down 2-0 in the fourth inning, Eckerson singled to lead off and came around to score on a two-out single from senior Claire Alexander, a South Williamsport graduate, but King’s used single-runs in the fourth and fifth to take the three-run decision.

Engel (1-3) allowed nine hits and two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Megan Matsko, Elie Higdon and Colleen Shuler each had two hits for King’s. Alyssa Fox tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits and three walks, as she left 10 Warriors on base. She struck out three.

The Warriors head to Juniata College for a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
