Local roundup: Lycoming women’s, men’s tennis teams fall to Houghton

The Lycoming College women’s tennis team split the six singles matches with Houghton University, but Houghton won the doubles point to edge Lycoming, 4-3, in non-conference action at Kerr-Pegula Field House.

Lycoming (1-7 overall) won a pair of singles matches in third set superset tiebreakers and added forfeit wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles in the close matchup.

Sophomore Sadie Stahl, a South Williamsport graduate, outlasted Victoria Martinez at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, and sophomore Yeanneth Rosado posted a 6-4, 4-6, 10-6, win over Angelina Miller at No. 4 singles.

• The Lycoming College men’s tennis team fell to Houghton University, 7-0, in non-conference action at Kerr-Pegula Field House. Sophomore Kayvan Shams, a South Williamsport graduate, won six games at No. 2 singles, falling 6-4, 6-2 to Eben Schilke.

Lycoming fell to 2-4 and Houghton improved to 3-2.

• The Lock Haven softball team opened PSAC East Division play with a road sweep over Millersville. Lock Haven moves to 9-7 overall on the season and starts conference play at 1-1. Millersville moves to 11-7 overall and 1-1 in PSAC East play.

Lock Haven won the first game in five innings, 12-1, and lost the second game, 13-8.

Game one featured the Bald Eagles dominating from start to finish with all nine players in the lineup coming around to score.

After each team plated a run in the first inning, Lock Haven broke the game open in the second with back-to-back home runs from Hailey Irwin and Madison Hardy. Maci Brodzina drove in two more runs with a single to give Lock Haven a 5-1 lead.

In game two, Lock Haven struck first by adding six runs in the first inning and one more in the second to build a 7-0 lead thanks to RBI singles from Olivia LaMeau, Hardy, Madison Melius, Evelyn Osborne and Erin Van Ness.

Millersville responded by scoring 13 unanswered runs spread across the second through the sixth innings on 11 hits

• Mansfield’s baseball team lost a doubleheader on the road at West Chester, 4-1 and 12-7.

In game one, Mansfield starting pitcher for the game was junior, Garrett Emerick, he threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing just four hits and two strikeouts.

Scoring started quick for the Mounties in the second inning when Cooper Rother placed a sacrificial bunt to advance his teammates on the bases.

However, the Cacher overthrew down to first which gave Nick Ledger and Billy Riggs the chance to score.

The scoring started in the first inning of game two with a ground ball to third base Riggs gave Sekulski enough time to make it to home plate. But the Golden Rams were able to pull a fast start on the Mountaineers with 12 runs following in the first three innings.

Mansfield held off the rams in the fourth finally able to pick up some momentum in the fifth.
