Local roundup: Taddeo helps Neumann baseball defeat Northeast Bradford

PHOTO PROVIDED Williamsport graduate Owen Berry, a senior shortstop and right-handed pitcher for Lebanon Valley, recorded his 100th career hit against FDU Florham on Saturday.

Avery Taddeo belted a walk-off single and Kane Meixel dominated in relief as St. John Neumann won an eight-inning thriller, 10-9, against Northeast Bradford at Logue Field Saturday. Taddeo ha a big day, going 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs, while Meixel earned the win with three scoreless innings and five strikeouts.

Clark Bower was dialed in, going 3 for 3 with four RBIs and Maverick Dunkleberger doubled, while scoring three times. Meixel also scored three runs and Neumann (1-1) overcame a 4-1 third inning deficit.

Landon Lathan protected a one-run lead, throwing 2 1/3 hitless innings in relief, while striking out five as Jersey Shore roared back from an early five-run deficit and defeated Wellsboro, 8-7. The Bulldogs (3-0) trailed 5-0 in the second inning before scoring four times in the bottom of that inning and four more in the fifth to take an 8-5 lead.

Wellsboro scored twice in the fifth before Lathan entered that inning and slammed the door, recording five of his seven outs via strikeout. Hayden Kelley earned the win and six different players had hits.

“Despite difficult weather conditions, we played well enough to win. Jersey Shore is a solid baseball team and they capitalized on a few more opportunities than we did today,” Wellsboro coach Kylie Smith said. “It was a quality early season baseball game which should help us moving forward.”

That included Carter Rhinehart who had three RBIs as well as Mazden Lupton and Greyson Confair who added two each. Marek Mascho went 2 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs for Wellsboro (1-1).

• The NCAA Division III leader in goals, senior Riley Block, notched five more to lead the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team, which fell to Susquehanna University, 18-5, in Landmark Conference action.

Coming into the game leading Division III with 6.44 goals per contest, Block added five more goals to give her 63 on the season, just 17 goals from the school record of 80 that has been reached three times.

Susquehanna led 8-0 at the end of the first before Block scored three goals before the half ended. She added two more goals in the fourth quarter, giving her 310 career points, just nine from the school record held by Kelly McGinniss (2019).

Lock Haven turned a first-quarter blitz into an insurmountable advantage, riding a dominant offensive performance to an 18-11 victory over Gannon in PSAC Western Division action.

The win moved the Bald Eagles to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Golden Knights fell to 3-7 on the season.

The game’s defining moment came in a frantic first quarter that saw the lead change hands multiple times before Lock Haven seized control for good. Gannon came out hot to build an early 3-0 lead, but the Bald Eagles responded with a stunning eight-goal run the rest of the period – capped by back-to-back goals from Gabby Gunnip to take an 8-3 advantage into the second quarter.

Lexi Bunk was the engine driving Lock Haven’s offense all afternoon, finishing with five goals and three assists for eight points.

• Freshman attacker Samuel Hall scored twice for the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team in a 15-4 setback to Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference matchup.

Lycoming (2-7, 0-3 Landmark) fought through a low-scoring first period, allowing the first two goals of the contest before sophomore Cesar Carmona-Felipe scored the final tally of the period to finish the first 15 minutes trailing 2-1. Hall scored his first tally, an unassisted goal with 2:35 remaining in the first half, to close the Warriors within two, though Susquehanna (5-6, 2-1 Landmark) answered with a late goal to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.

The River Hawks scored the first eight goals of the second half. Hall broke the string with a man-up goal with 3:24 to go, stuffing a pass from junior Brogan Wooley into the net for his second tally. Wooley found sophomore James Hall-Melynchuck just 13 seconds later for the Warriors’ final tally.

Hans Huber’s extra-man goal with one-tenth of a second remaining in overtime lifted Bucknell to a wild 14-13 win over Lafayette at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison overcame a five-goal second-half deficit while improving to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League.

The game saw a little bit of everything, from a goalie goal to matching five-goal runs to a critical overtime penalty when Lafayette (5-5, 1-3 PL) tried to call a timeout that it didn’t have. In the end, it was an important victory for the Bison, who remain just a half-game behind Loyola and Boston University for the Patriot League lead heading into a home clash with Army next week.

Michael Meyer recorded three goals and assisted on Huber’s overtime winner, and Peter Grandolfo also had a four-point day with two goals and two assists. Defenseman Caleb Lewis led all players with a career-high eight ground balls, and Jack Tully nabbed six GBs, including a couple of big ones on the faceoff wings late in the game.
