Lock Haven softball splits road series against Millersville
MILLERSVILLE – The Lock Haven softball team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division play with a road sweep over Millersville on Friday (March 20) afternoon.
Lock Haven moves to 9-7 overall on the season and starts conference play at 1-1. Millersville moves to 11-7 overall and 1-1 in PSAC East play.
GAME ONE
Game One featured the Bald Eagles dominating from start to finish with all nine players in the lineup coming around to score. They took the game, 12-1, needing just five innings to do so by way of mercy rule.
After each team plated a run in the first inning, Lock Haven broke the game open in the second with back-to-back home runs from Hailey Irwin and Madison Hardy. Maci Brodzina drove in two more runs with a single to give Lock Haven a 5-1 lead.
In the third frame Irwin hit another solo shot over the left centerfield wall to extend the Bald Eagle lead.
Lock Haven exploded in the fifth inning by capitalizing on Millersville’s mistakes for six unearned runs from four Marauders errors.
Talia Ross (7-1) continued her early-season dominance with another win in the circle. Ross went four innings, striking out seven batters and giving up only one run on three hits.
Marissa Horn pitched the fifth inning and retired the Marauders in order by pitching nine straight strikes while recording two strikeouts.
Lock Haven recorded 11 hits and played error-free defense.
Brodzina finished 3-4 with three RBIs, Blaire Balestrini and Gianna Goodman both recorded multiple hits to go along with Irwin’s two-home run game.
GAME TWO
Lock Haven struck first in the nightcap by adding six runs in the first inning and one more in the second to build a 7-0 lead thanks to RBI singles from Olivia LaMeau, Hardy, Madison Melius, Evelyn Osborne and Erin Van Ness.
However, Millersville responded by scoring 13 unanswered runs spread across the second through the sixth innings on 11 hits. With that, it took the game by a score of 13-8.
Lock Haven recorded 13 hits and continued to play sharp defense with zero errors.
Melius went 3-4 with two RBIs, Balestrini and Hardy also added multiple hits in game two.
Lock Haven softball will wrap its PSAC East weekend road trip Saturday at West Chester for a doubleheader with game one slated to start at 1 p.m.
