Penn College cancels remainder of baseball season due to investigation

Less than a week after making roster changes and coaching staff changes, Penn College announced on Thursday in a statement that it was canceling the remainder of the college baseball season.

The college said in a statement that it received notice of reported concerns last week involving the baseball team and that the college “takes these matters seriously and canceled practices and postponed games while conducting a thorough investigation.”

The college postponed six consecutive games before Thursday’s announcement that it was canceling the remainder of the season.

Specifics of the investigation regarding what happened following the team’s return from Myrtle Beach — where it last competed in mid-March — has not been disclosed or released by Penn College.

When reached out to last Thursday regarding the investigation and probe, Penn College didn’t provide information or further comment about what occurred aside from a statement that it had postponed two games at that point.

“The college subsequently met with all remaining eligible student-athletes to assess whether the institution would have enough players to safely field a team,” Penn College said in a statement on Thursday. “After careful consideration and a review of all available options in this complex situation, the college has made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the 2026 baseball season.”

In Thursday’s statement, Penn College noted “the college remains committed to supporting its student-athletes and moving the baseball program forward. Eligible baseball team members will have access to campus resources to maintain fitness, build as a team and continue developing skills. The college intends to open a national search this spring for its next baseball coach, enabling the institution to recruit strong talent and restore its program.”

Penn College’s statement noted that the college is “aware of speculation and unofficial information circulating regarding this matter.”

The college cited individual privacy protection and the integrity of the review process as to why it was not providing comment at this time.

“Additional information will be shared as appropriate,” Penn College said in its statement.

Penn College began the season 4-5 before the investigation began. The last games the Wildcats played were in Myrtle Beach with a split against Dean College, losing the first contest, 8-7, before winning the second game, 8-3.

At the time of the announcement, Penn College had 28 players listed on its roster. No coaches were listed following the announcement earlier in the week that a national search would be underway for its next coach.

Starting at $2.99/week.
