Local roundup: Montoursville softball beats Warrior Run, 14-3, in five innings
Emily George was locked in offensively and Julie Friel was equally impressive in the pitching circle as the two seniors helped Montoursville defeat Warrior Run, 14-3 in five innings. George sparked an 11-hit offense which scored 10 fifth inning runs, going 4 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs. Friel also had a hit and threw a two-hitter, striking out 10.
Eight players had hits for the Warriors (4-2), including Laney Yonkin who was 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs. Kayleigh Sheleman hit a double and drove in two runs, while Karsyn Stone was 1 for 1 with a walk and RBI. March Manotti produced a hit, two walks, two runs and a RBI. Makenzie Heffner slammed a three-run home run for Warrior Run and Ella Printzenhoff doubled.
Lewisburg collected 11 hits and scored at least two runs in three innings, but the Green Dragons fell in a close game to Shamokin, 10-9. A four-run bottom of the sixth put the Indians ahead, 10-9, and the Green Dragons weren’t able to rally in the seventh.
Siani Turner went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Brinley Haile (2 for 3), Emma Apanel (2 for 3), Tymber Jamieson (2 for 4) all had multiple hits. Haile hit a home run while Gutkowski and Jamieson had doubles. Morgan Shannon had a double for Lewisburg as well with two RBIs.
• Cooper Roman and Sam Springman combined on a four-inning no-hitter and Mason Bryson slammed a home run, helping Montgomery blank St. John Neumann, 15-0 in four innings. Roman worked the first three innings and Springman the fourth as Montgomery (5-1) won its fourth straight game. Briar Persing went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs, while Lincoln Miller went 1 for 1 with a double, three walks and two RBIs. Chase Bennett added a RBI double, Hayden Denton an RBI single and Parker Bennett had a hit with three runs.
Maddyx Snyder had a big day, going 3 for 3 with four RBIs and helping Muncy defeat Bucktail, 17-2 in four innings. Snyder also scored twice as Muncy (2-1) scored 16 runs over its final three at-bats after falling behind, 2-1. Kynton Fish went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs and winning pitcher Corbyn Gardner had two hits with two runs. Muncy took control with nine runs in the second inning.
• Williamsport’s boys tennis team traveled to Central Mountain and picked up its second win of the year with an exciting 3-2 victory against the Wildcats in a league matchup.
Williamsport saw two matches go three sets. At No. 2 doubles, Richard Chen and Mason Robinson beat Mason Temple and Gavin Edmonston, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. At No. 3 singles, Joseph Hillman beat Braydon Spedding, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Central Mountain won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. At No. 1 singles, Joey McCloskey defeated Howard Chen, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, the Wildcats’ Tim Brinker earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Spencer Kaar of Williamsport.
The Millionaires’ doubles team of Wyatt Judge and Charles Plummer secured a 6-4, 6-2 win against Central Mountain’s Gage Scanlan and Ben Brinker.
Lewisburg held off Central Columbia for a narrow 3-2 victory. The Green Dragons secured the win thanks to a doubles sweep.
Colby Jacob and Tyson Nicholls beat Tanner Fensch and Aiden Mahamadou, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 and at No. 2 doubles, Lewisburg’s Clark Nicholls and Olin McIlwaine picked up a three-set win vs. Conner Litchfield and Aaron Dolak. The Green Dragon duo won 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
In singles competition, Lewisburg’s win came at No. 2 where Canyon Swartzentruber beat Joey Pecora 6-4, 6-4.
Jersey Shore defeated Montoursville, 3-2. The Bulldogs’ three wins all came in singels action.
Ryder Fink won at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Teli Bobotas. Ezra Paulhamus won at No.2. singles by beating Gio Catino 6-0, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Saul Hensler secured a three-set win over Colby Ulmer, 6-7 (9-11), 6-3, 6-0.
Montoursville’s Cole Snyder and Rain Snyder won at No. 1 doubles over Abram Paulhamus and Dillon Harsanyi, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, Montoursville won another three-set contest as Cullen Pauling and Mason Fry beat Camden Stellfox and Dylan Hensler, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
The loss drops the Warriors to 5-4.
Loyalsock swept Hughesville, 5-0. Elijah Lin earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Kevin Bobak while David Bjorkman posted a 6-0, 6-0 win of his own at No. 3 singles over Michael Swales.
At No. 2 singles, Loyalsock’s Nathaniel DePrenda beat Luke Reagan in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.
• Wyalusing won a tri-meet in girls track and field competition with a score of 103 over Canton (31) and Towanda (29).
Canton senior Daveian Crowley won the 100 with a time of 13.44, beating Wyalusing’s Vayda Rought by 0.22 seconds. Hayley Larsen of Canton took third in 14.19.
Canton’s Danah Wesneski ran a 30.29 to win the 200. Canton’s Alexis McRoberts had a throw of 35 feet, 8 inches to win the shot put by almost three feet. McRoberts was a two-event winner for Canton as she had a throw of 107-3 to win the discus.
• In boys track and field, Wyalusing (94) beat Towanda (43) and Canton (42).
Canton went 1-2-3 in the 400 as senior Lawrence Halbfoerster won with a time of 55.13 followed by sophomore Manuel Halbfoerster in second (57.39) and junior Landon Lake in third (57.91). Lawrence Halbfoerster was a two-event winner for Canton as he claimed a win in the 800 in 2:15.36, winning by roughly three seconds over Towanda’s Emmett Klees.
Canton’s John Whitehead, a junior, took second in the 110 hurdles in 17.85. In the 1,600, Canton sophomore Henry Proseus ran a 6:08.93, which was good enough for third.
Canton’s Chase Petrowksi won the 200 with a time of 24.72 while Whitehead was third in 25.78.
Canton’s Larence Halbfoerster, Lake, Manuel Halbfoerster and Whitehead ran a 3:53.10 to win the 1,600 relay.
• The Lock Haven women’s tennis team (2-6) hosted Indiana (Pa.) (11-6) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match on Tuesday afternoon at the Central PA Tennis Center.
IUP won the match, 7-0. The Bald Eagles return to action on Thursday, April 9 at 4 p.m. when they travel to Shippensburg.
