A routine city crash Monday morning involving a motorcycle and a Hyundai Elantra ended with federal agents taking the car’s driver and two others into custody, suspected of being illegal immigrants from Peru, according to Williamsport police.

Following the 9:20 a.m. collision at West Fourth and Locust streets, Williamsport, the 27–year-old Loyalsock Township cyclist was taken to UPMC Williamsport to get medical treatment.

The car’s driver fled the scene, but supposedly was on his way back when a city police officer, seeing the damage to the front of his car, conducted a traffic stop at West Third and Walnut streets.

The driver, fluent in Spanish, spoke very little English and a female passenger could not speak any English at all, police said.

The driver had a license from Peru, but was not licensed in this country, police said. The car’s registration was expired, police added. He had a questionable passport, and the woman had no passport on her at all, police said.
