Mill Hall man shot after allegedly exchanging gunfire with state police

LOCK HAVEN – A Mill Hall man is recovering from gunshot wounds he suffered Tuesday night when he allegedly exchanged gunfire with state troopers in the parking lot of Lykens Market on Main Street in Beech Creek, according to court records.

The shooting involving Brandon L. Bitner, who is believed to be in his 40s, took place about 9 p.m. as he was fleeing from troopers in a high-speed pursuit that began at his Bald Eagle Township home on Eagle Valley Road, it was stated in an affidavit.

Troopers were at his home at 2476 Eagle Valley Road attempting to serve him a bench warrant for his arrest when he is alleged to have fired upon them, the court document stated.

Bitner then fled the property in a black 2001 Honda Accord, police said, adding that several troopers pursued Bitner with their cruisers’ emergency lights and sirens activated.

“The pursuit reached speeds in excess of 90 mph. It ended in the Lykens Market parking lot where Bitner emerged from the vehicle, brandished a shotgun and fired one round in the air and one round directly at troopers, who returned fire,” it was stated in the court document.

“Bitner was shot, wounded and ultimately taken into custody,” police said.

“He was taken by ambulance to UPMC Williamsport, where he is currently being treated for gunshot wounds,” an investigator wrote in the affidavit.

No troopers were injured in either shooting.

There was no information on Bitner’s medical condition on Wednesday morning.

The bench warrant police were trying to serve was dated Aug. 12 and stems from an incident charging Bitner with aggravated assault.
