Man killed in Nippenose Township crash

ANTES FORT – One person was killed Thursday night in a violent crash on Route 44, near Morgan Valley Road, in Nippenose Township, Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. confirmed.

The accident is being investigated by Lycoming Regional police.

Police Chief Christopher Kriner said a young man driving a passenger car was killed when his southbound vehicle and a northbound pickup truck collided about 6 p.m.

The car’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy coroner.

The truck was driven by a male, who was reportedly trapped in the wreckage along with his two passengers, one male and one female, Kriner said.

Once extricated, all three were taken by ambulances to UPMC Williamsport, Kriner said. The extent of their injuires were unknown Thursday night.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, Kriner said.

The crash shut down the two-lane state road from Antes Fort to Route 880 for an extended period of time. State police were assisting with the investigation.

This is the fourth traffic fatality in the county this month.

A 33-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a three-vehicle accident at Market and Packer streets in the city on Dec. 1.

A 33-year-old Unityville woman died Dec. 10 when her SUV slammed head-on into a tree on German Road in Franklin Township, according to state police.

And on Tuesday night, a 66-year-old Williamsport man died when his Chevrolet HHR compact wagon crashed into the back of a River Valley Transit Authority bus at West Fourth and Poplar streets in the city. However, investigators have not yet determined if the driver might have suffered a medical episode behind the wheel.
