A Williamsport man was left homeless on Wednesday afternoon when a two-alarm fire extensively damaged the interior of the house he rented at 669 Rose St.
“I think it’s a total loss,” Rick Guthrire said as he stood outside the home about 90 minutes after the fire erupted.
A contractor, Guthrire was not home when the fire was reported about 3:40 p.m.
He did manage to recover his wallet that he had left in the house.
Initally dispatched to investigate an attic fire, firefighters, when they reached the scene, faced “flames on the second floor, and smoke was pushing out from under the eaves,” city Fire Chief Sam Aungst said.

Fire Lt. Jeff Vogt quickly ordered a second alarm, which brought 10 off-duty city firefighters along with additional manpower and equipment from surrounding communities.
Firefighters donned self-contained breathing apparatus and used three hoses to get put the fire out
The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes, Aungst said.
There were no reports of injuries, he said.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross was providing emergency assistance to Guthrie. The home is owned by Colbi Matthew’s, a resident of Dauphin County

Aungst said the origin and cause of the fire remained under investigation.
The same property sustained extensive fire damage when a blaze, caused by a child playing with a lighter, broke out on July 4, 2020. No one was injured, but six people were left homeless in this fire.
