Williamsport Home Rule Study Commission to move forward

Unofficial results from Tuesday’s Primary Election show a proposal to establish a Home Rule Study Commission winning with about 63.6% of the vote, or 1,745 “yes” votes.

The proposal was to elect a commission to explore the possibility of Home Rule with the help of a state-funded consultant. Candidates Dante Miele-Elion, Liz Miele, Valerie Fessler, Brianna Stetts, Andrew Dincher, Caroline Payne and J. David Smith also were elected to serve on that commission, according to the unofficial election results on Lycoming County’s website.

After a period of nine months, the commission will synthesize its findings into a constitution tailored to the city, which citizens will vote on in the May 2027 election.

Jonas Crass, local government policy specialist with the Governor’s Center for Local Government, noted several cities have such charters, including Altoona, Hazleton, Reading and Lancaster, according to an April article in the Sun-Gazette.

Within 15 days of the certification of the commission candidates’ election victories, the elected commission must organize and hold its first public meeting.

Starting at $2.99/week.
