Seminar to assist

with cyber security

Lock Haven University Small Business Development Center will present a cyber security conference for businesses from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 17 at the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center.

Today, cyber threats are everywhere, and are becoming more aggressive, complex and sophisticated, according to a news release. Computing and internet security is everyone’s business.

The seminar will provide an overview of security, list some of the top vulnerabilities and get participants into a security mind set. Keynote presenters Lisa Bock and Anita Wood, associate professors of information technology at Pennsylvania College of Technology will teach participants the best practices to take to keep their servers, software and data safe from threats that exist in today’s complex environment.

Participants will learn the core security concepts and introduces risks such as social engineering malware, and spyware and discover some basic wireless security best practices, tips for beefing up browser security and techniques for implementing encryption. Discussion topics will be evaluating risks, threats and vulnerabilities, minimizing the attack surface, avoiding worms and viruses, protecting your system from spyware, making web browsers more secure, securing wireless transmissions, encrypting files, folders and drives and much more.

A catered lunch and presentation from Fulton Bank will take place right before industry specific breakout sessions steered toward the following areas: service/retail, institutional/government and manufacturing.

Workshop helps with

starting businesses

A workshop at noon, May 19, will help aspiring entrepreneurs begin the process of successful business ownership including evaluating business ideas, developing a business plan, and exploring financing options. The workshop will be held at the LHU Small Business Development Center’s offices, 301 W. Church St., Lock Haven.

The presenters/discussion leaders for this workshop are the members of the Small Business Development Center’s staff and a local commercial lender.

Attendees will learn: unique lifestyle requirements involved in owning a business, how to assess the feasibility of their business idea, differences between business organization structures, how to develop a business plan, how to obtain financing, how to market their product or service and the applications and licenses needed to start their company

The May meeting of the Williamsport Inventor’s Club will feature a presentation by Mary McKinley, partner and corporate secretary/treasurer at Wilkinson Dunn Co. at 5:15 p.m., May 25. McKinley will be speaking on insurance needs of the product developer with particular emphasis on product liability.

McKinley is a lifelong resident of Lycoming County and began her insurance career with Wilkinson Dunn Co. in 1194. McKinley is an account executive handling commercial property and casualty business. McKinley is licensed for property, casualty, life, health, annuities and related lines in Pennsylvania and New York and has attained the certified insurance counselor designation.

The Williamsport Inventor’s Club is designed to educate, foster collaboration and networking and give attendees the tools, resources and knowledge they need to move their inventions forward.

The Innovative Manufacturers’ Center is host to the Williamsport/Lycoming Keystone Innovation Zone, which has provided program support to the Williamsport Inventor’s Club since its founding in 2007. Meetings take place on the 4th Wednesday of most months and are open to the public.

The Small Business Development Center of Lock Haven University will hold an “Introduction to QuickBooks” workshop from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., May 31, at 301 W. Church St., Lock Haven.

Financial accounting software can help business owners save time and make money. Get the details on how you can use the No. 1 rated small business accounting software for your business needs by attending this upcoming session. QuickBooks Pro software will be used for this training program.

The hands-on introductory class will cover chart of accounts, adding new accounts, items, customers, and vendors. Participants will learn how to track accounts receivable and accounts payable, record sales and expenses, and how to maintain a check register. Producing reports and backing-up your data also will be introduced. This class normally fills up quickly, so don’t hesitate to call or visit the center’s website.
