Job market must be worrisome for graduates

If a new prediction evolves into fact, many college students whose degrees will be conferred in the spring could face days, weeks, months or longer of anxiety or unfulfilled dreams, according to an article that was published in the Wall Street Journal last month. Some people might shrug off that notion, reminding others that it is commonplace for uncertainties and anxieties to greet new graduates beginning this new chapter of their lives. Of course, the level of uncertainty and anxiety will depend on students’ preparation for this new phase of their lives. Those who have engaged in ...

Good job

I had the pleasure of sitting with the Repasz Band holiday concert and, like the four-star restaurant reviews, I give them a hundred stars. Their theme had to do with bells. They had the stage lined up with bells and one time during the concert, they threw out bells to the band. They really went over the moon with this concert, not to mention video slides about bells and also, A-plus for the bellringers. As I was sitting there watching the crowd come in, I thought to myself, being the oldest band around, it truly is amazing how you drag out not only the old generation but the ...

Astounding

The Nutcracker show which was performed on December 6th and 7th by the students of Saint John’s School of the Arts 1157 Market Street, Williamsport at the Journey Bank Community Arts Center was breathtaking. What a beautiful reminder of the holiday season that is front and center in our thoughts. On behalf of the Board ...

Abuse of presidential pardons

Donald Trump made hay out of President Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter. In my opinion, he had every right to raise questions. Biden’s motivation was understandable—he acted as a father—but a motive isn’t an excuse. Setting that aside, we’re left with a more troubling pattern: Trump’s unprecedented number of pardons and commutations granted to politically connected, indicted, or convicted figures. Why, for instance, did former Honduran President Juan Hernández—convicted of colluding with traffickers to move 400 tons of cocaine into the U.S.—deserve clemency? Why ...

What other newspapers are saying: Senator’s ‘solution’ dodges problems

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) thinks he has a new idea: no taxes on health care. He has proposed making all out-of-pocket health care expenses tax deductible, saying that would “ help people immediately.” But would it? Right now, there are already significant tax breaks on health care. The largest is the exemption of employer-sponsored health insurance from income taxes. That exemption didn’t arise because the government wanted to help people pay for health care. It was an accident. During World War II, wages were capped by the government, but health benefits were not. Many ...
