Alleged thief thought it was her ‘lucky day’ after picking up $200 from Jersey Shore district judge’s office floor

On the afternoon of July 21, Ellen May Dailey stopped at the office of District Judge Denise Dieter on Market Street in Jersey Shore to pay a fine, according to a Lycoming Regional police affidavit.

While in the office, she picked up two $100 bills that she noticed on the floor, stuck them in the waistband of her pants and walked out the door after paying her fine, it was alleged in the court document. The money belonged to another woman, who had accidentally dropped the bills on the floor when she was in the office to pay a fine moments earlier, police said.

The entire incident was captured on the office’s surveillance video system, police said, adding that the video recorded the 18-year-old Jersey Shore woman “looking around and up at the camera” as she allegedly took the cash.

Soon after the theft, an officer went to Dailey’s home at 1230 Allegheny St. When she answered the door, the officer told her, “I’m sure you know why I’m here,” it was stated in the court document. Dailey said she did know, and obtained the two $100 bills, which she handed over to the officer.

When she was told that charges were going to be filed, Dailey began sobbing and told the officer she “thought it was her lucky day,” according to the affidavit.

Charged with theft and receiving stolen property as well as theft of lost or misplaced property, Dailey has been sent a summons and will have a preliminary hearing next week.

Starting at $2.99/week.
