Homeless woman allegedly steals car, enters home near DuBoistown

After illegally entering the woman’s unlocked home on Edgewood Avenue, just outside DuBoistown, in Armstrong Township early Monday morning, Savannah Wilton grabbed the resident’s keys to a 2012 Buick LaCrosse that was parked outside, state police said.

Wilton, a 29-year-old homeless woman, got in the car and took off, telling troopers later that “Jesus Christ gave her permission” to take the vehicle, it was stated in an affidavit.

Wilton was apprehended just before 9 p.m. Tuesday when state troopers caught her driving the stolen car in the 600 block of McIntyre Way in Lewis Township.

Troopers were en route to a burglary in progress on McIntyre Way when they came upon Wilton driving the stolen car, police said.

It turns out that Wilton not only stole the car, but illegally entered an unlocked cabin on McIntyre Way; the very property the troopers were dispatched to, the affidavit stated.

Wilton admitted to entering the cabin “because she thought it was abandoned,” police were told. She told the troopers she “did not steal anything from the residence, however, she did drink some juice that (she found) inside a refrigerator. She planned on sleeping there overnight due to being homeless,” it was stated in the court document. However, the woman said she was “creeped out” and left the cabin, police said. The troopers intercepted her as she was “leaving to find another place to stay,” police said.

After being processed at the state police barracks, Wilton was arraigned before District Judge Kirsten Gardner on felony charges of burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, criminal trespassing as well as two misdemeanor counts of loitering and prowling and one count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. She was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Starting at $2.99/week.
