Suspected impaired driver found unconscious on I-180 exit ramp in Pennsdale

It was about 4:40 a.m. on March 1 when state troopers and paramedics arrived at the exit ramp at the Pennsdale interchange of Interstate 180 East to find driver Steven James Michael Martin unresponsive and locked in his 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, according to an affidavit. The emergency responders had to smash out the driver’s window in order to get the vehicle unlocked since the lock switch on the passenger door was not working, police said. Suffering from an overdose, Martin, 33, of 1152 Cemetery Road, Muncy, was pulled out of the vehicle and loaded onto a stretcher before medical technicians administered narcan in an attempt to bring him back to life, police said.

Martin regained consciousness, but was unable to give consent to allow troopers to search the vehicle, police said. He was taken by ambulance to the nearby Geisinger medical facility. In an effort to determine his identity, police located his wallet near the car’s driver’s seat, according to an affidavit. In the wallet was a packet of suspected heroin, police said. The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded. While being treated at the hospital, Martin, suspected of being impaired, refused to provide a blood sample, police said. He was then discharged from the hospital.

Within an hour, troopers obtained and executed a search warrant for the car, seizing “a baggie” of heroin and assorted drug paraphernalia, it was stated in the court document.

Charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of suspected heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended driver’s license, Martin has waived his preliminary hearing before District Judge Kirsten Gardner and is free on $2,500 bail.

Starting at $2.99/week.
