Foundation celebrates another year

The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania celebrated new members and honored outgoing board members Wednesday night at the Williamsport Country Club during the charitable organization’s annual dinner.

Special attention was paid to Dr. Davie Jane Gilmour and Jack McKernan, two community figures whose time on the foundation’s board of directors has come to an end.

Gilmour, president of Pennsylvania College of Technology, served from 2007 to 2015 and said the foundation has “transformed thousands of lives,” but added there is “much more to do.”

Marshall Welch III, outgoing chairman of the board, said Gilmour helped rebrand the foundation and was instrumental in implementing one of its strategic plans and its ongoing relocation.

Formerly known as the Williamsport-Lycoming Foundation, the community trust’s roots go back nearly 100 years. Made up of charitable agencies and individuals, the trust works to better the community through grants and scholarships.

Nearly $4 million in grants were given out by the foundation in 2014, according to Welch. Last year, the foundation had an asset value of $78,721,573. It received $2,544,562 from donors and gave out 511 grants and 104 scholarships.

McKernan, president of Williamsport Moving Co., served on the board of directors from 2007 until 2015. He served also on several foundation committees and, at one point, was the secretary and treasurer.

Welch noted that the partnership granted about $18 million during McKernan’s tenure.

Some new members were honored as well, including the community action agency STEP Inc. and the car dealer Blaise Alexander.

Both were recognized as Silver Circle Society members for donating $25,000 or more to the foundation.

Jennifer Wilson, partnership president, said next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the group. She said preparations are ongoing for a yearlong celebration.

Frank Pellegrino, incoming chairman of the partnership board of directors, called the upcoming anniversary a “turning point” for the organization, which he said has created stronger and more vibrant communities through its work.

He said the foundation has helped make this region a great place to live, raise families and recreate.

Starting at $2.99/week.
