Tax deadlines stay pat for municipalities

Municipalities are seeing a steady flow of property tax bills arriving as the April 30 discount deadline draws closer.

“I’m right on schedule,” Loyalsock Township Tax Collector Dorothy “Dottie” White Mertz said. “More than 2,000 have paid so far.”

The township, like some others in Lycoming County, did not push back its tax deadlines, despite the economic issues and job losses resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Property owners have until Thursday to take advantage of the 2 percent discount for real estate bills. June 30 is the deadline for regular payments.

The city of Williamsport moved back its tax date deadlines.

Lycoming County’s tax deadlines have not been changed.

“We’re going to follow what the county does because our taxes are on the same bill as the county,” Wolf Township Secretary/Treasurer Jen Mausteller said. “We don’t want to split it up.”

Mausteller said tax bill payments from property owners looking to take advantage of the early discount are on pace with previous years.

The township has about 1,500 property owners.

Hughesville Tax Collector Dorothy Bennett said there has been no move to change the tax bill deadlines for borough residents and businesses.

The number of payments coming in are at about the same pace as other years.

“That surprises me,” she said. “It seems to be doing pretty good. I am getting quite a few by mail.”

About half of the borough’s 800 property owners, she said, pay their property taxes early.

Jersey Shore Borough Manager Joe Hamm noted that the county does the borough’s tax collection.

However, he said borough council will likely decide at its next meeting whether to push back the tax collection deadlines for Jersey Shore.

“We could extend the discount rate and the other rate to give people more time,” he said. “There may be a three-month extension for each.”

Old Lycoming Township is not moving back its deadlines for its approximately 2,200 property owners.

Tax collector Dave Frey noted that township and county real estate taxes appear on the same bill. For a municipality to decide to push back tax deadlines when the county hasn’t done so would merely complicate matters, he said.

“The city of Williamsport did push back tax deadlines,” he said. “The only way they were able to do it so easily is because they bill real estate taxes themselves. All other municipalities are on the same tax bill with county real estate.”

Clinton Township Tax Collector Kimberly Alexander said property owners have been much slower this year to pay their taxes early and take advantage of the discount rate.

However, she expects more tax payments to arrive as the discount deadline draws nearer.

Alexander said she felt it might have been a good idea for the township to move back its tax deadlines this year.

“Of course, I think it should have been pushed back this year. People are struggling,” she said.
