PPL Electric announces 30% rate hike effective June 1
PPL Electric Utilities has notified customers of a 30% rate increase going into effect June 1, according to reports.
The electric company’s current rate of 8.941 cents per kilowatt hour will increase to 12.366 per kilowatt hour, the Times News of Carbon County is reporting.
The average PPL residential customer is expected to see their monthly bill increase by about $34.
“In current dollars (not adjusted for inflation), this is the highest residential price to compare since the default rate began being offered in 2006,” Alana Roberts of PPL told the Morning Call of Allentown.
PPL says inflation, global economic events and increases in energy costs are among the reasons for the increase.
“We do not own power plants so we don’t generate electricity — we purchase energy, electricity, the same way you that you as a customer can purchase your electricity,” said Jane George of PPL told WFMZ TV of Allentown.
PPL also said, according to WGAL TV of Lancaster, that customers might be able to save money by choosing an electricity supplier.
