Loyalsock man locked up on 6 counts of attempted homicide
A Loyalsock Township man is locked up on no bail after firing multiple gunshots Saturday night at a crowd outside his Walters Road home during an argument with neighbors, state police alleged in an affidavit
No one was injured in the 9 p.m. shooting, but everyone in the group “sought cover” when Coy Daniel Thornton, 40, shot “five to six rounds of ammunition” at them while in an intoxicated state, police alleged.
In the group were six people, including a 4-year-old child, police said. Thornton then went into his home at 1965 Walters Road only to come back out and “fire about eight to 12 additional rounds from an unknown firearm” in the area of the neighbor’s home, the affidavit.
“All parties were inside the neighbor’s home or in the immediate area seeking shelter,” police alleged.
State police rushed to the scene and took Thornton into custody without incident. It all started when Thornton, driving a car on Walters Road, turned into the neighbor’s “private driveway, continued down the lane at a high rate of speed,” police alleged in the affidavit.
Police said Thornton “nearly struck a parked car in the driveway before swerving toward some pine trees” and then continuing to his home and parking in his garage.
Two neighbors went to Thornton to talk with him about his driving, police said. Thornton was “intoxicated and began arguing,” police were told. Four other people came out of the home, police said.
“Thornton began yelling and made a remark that he was ‘going to show them crazy,'” it was alleged in the affidavit. He went into his house and came out with a gun, pointing it at the group before he started shooting, police alleged.
He was arraigned before District Judge Denise Dieter on six counts each of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and one count of DUI.
During the proceeding, Thornton denied firing the gun at anyone. “I didn’t shoot at them. I shot at the hillside and at the creek.” Dieter denied him bail and sent him directly to the Lycoming County prison.
