Couple displaced after garage fire spreads to home in Crawford Township

RAUCHTOWN — A couple was displaced following a two-alarm fire in Crawford Township, Clinton County recently.

Over a dozen fire companies from Clinton and Lycoming counties were called to 735 Fox Road, Jersey Shore, Tuesday evening for reports of a garage fire that spread to the home.

According to Nippenose Valley Volunteer Fire Company Chief, Dean Miller, the two-car garage was attached to the home.

Officials said it was the home of Kenneth Heck.

“We were called out around 5:30 p.m.,” he said.

Miller said roughly 10 apparatus from Lycoming County and four from Clinton County were called to assist in putting out the flames. Crews were able to get the flames under control after roughly an hour.

Due to a lack of fire hydrants in the remote area, located a few minutes outside of Rauchtown, a fill station was set up at Ravensburg State Park along state Route 880 to fill tankers with water.

“They provided various apparatus, tankers and engines. We had to haul water from Ravensburg State Park,” Miller said. “There’s ponds all over but nobody has access roads to them.”

Miller said once on the scene, fire crews were able to create a good stop point on the fire within the home. However, they couldn’t prevent damage to the two-story structure.

“The main part of the house did

sustain quite a bit of fire and smoke damage, and water damage unfortunately,” he said.

Although the area was surrounded on three sides by trees, Miller said that didn’t pose a threat.

“We had one small grass fire when we arrived, but it was very quickly put out. We used less than two gallons of water to extinguish it and went straight to the house,” he said.

According to Miller, a fire marshal from Pennsylvania State Police will be coming to the home to investigate the cause of the blaze.

“It’s nothing suspicious though,” he said.

Miller noted the couple are staying with relatives and the American Red Cross are assisting them with clothing and other needs.

No injuries were reported from the fire, Miller said.

Companies from Lycoming and Clinton counties called to the fire were Nippenose Valley, Jersey Shore, Antes Fort, Nisbet, DuBoistown, Woodward Township, Montgomery, Washington, Sugar Valley, Avis and Wayne Township.
