Debby downer: Lycoming County under flood warning until noon Friday

Tropical Storm Debby is heading up the East Coast as it has made landfall for a second time.

As Debby drenches South Carolina, heavy rainfall from the tropical storm is also expected to cause flooding across portions of the mid-Atlantic states and Northeast through Saturday morning.

There will be a moderate risk of excessive rainfall for most of our area Friday as Debby moves through the region. Most of central Pennsylvania will see 3 to 5 inches of rainfall with localized amounts of 6 to 7 inches possible, according to the National Weather Service.

A flood warning is in effect until noon Friday.

The excessive runoff may result in the flooding of low-lying, flood prone locations, according to the National Weather Service.

The Trout Run Volunteer Fire Company is urging residents in low-lying areas to “please be aware of rising water and evacuate upon request if the need arises. Make sure your sump pumps are working properly — batteries for flashlights and generators ready to go.”

The National Hurricane Center says Debby came ashore early Thursday near Bulls Bay, South Carolina. The storm is expected to keep moving inland, spreading heavy rain and possible flooding all the way up through the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast by the weekend. Debby first made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane early Monday on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
