Man killed, woman injured after car goes airborne near Montoursville

One man was killed and a woman was seriously injured in a very violent crash Tuesday night when their vehicle went airborne off of Interstate 180 and slammed into an embankment below along Brushy Ridge Road, state police confirmed.

The demolition of the vehicle from the estimated 60-foot fall was so bad that police were unable initially to determine its make or model. The vehicle’s engine broke loose, landing about 50 to 60 feet from where the vehicle landed.

The crash, about a half a mile east of Montoursville, was reported at around 6:30 p.m.

The two people were traveling west on the interstate, and it had not yet been determined what caused the vehicle to go out of control, police said.

Both the woman and driver were trapped in the wreckage and extricated from the vehicle by Montoursville volunteer firefighters.

The woman was quickly loaded into a Montoursville ambulance and rushed to UPMC Williamsport. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Representatives from the Lycoming County Coroner’s Office arrived on the scene at 7:20 p m. The body will be taken to the forensic center at UPMC Williamsport.

Police did not say which person was driving.

Brushy Ridge Road was expected to be closed for an extended period of time until troopers completed their on-scene investigation.
