Charlotte E. Young Mengel

Charlotte E. Young Mengel, 94, of Gamble Township, passed from this earthly life on July 30, 2020, at her residence, with family and friends at her side.

She was born Oct. 27, 1925, in Beaver Falls, daughter of the late John and Bessie Anna Charlotte (Reily) Young. She married the love of her life, Luther C. Mengel, in 1946.

Charlotte was a life member of Chippewa United Methodist Church and attended Beech Valley United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Herb Society of America, the Village Charmers, and the Northcentral PA Conservancy. Creative and artistic, she enjoyed oil painting and crafting miniature scenes in eggshells. She was queen of the “from scratch” double-crust fresh fruit pie. She enjoyed working in her flower and herb gardens, and watching birds and other wildlife at her home. She played piano by ear and loved to dance, even if her partner was a mobility walker. She could whistle a merry tune and pull up a story or joke at any moment. She was a historian and genealogist, and she was devoted to her family above all.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother, John Young.

She is survived by her two daughters, Cynthia M. (James W. Bower Sr.), of Trout Run, Janice “Jan” Mengel, of Glenshaw; a sister, Patricia Sobell; four grandchildren, Sean S. Cochrane Sr., James W. Bower Jr., Michael G. Bower, and Christy Gibson; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The family is exceedingly grateful to Charlotte’s special friends and neighbors, and caregivers, Brenda, Chrissie, Dawn, Deb, Francine, Joy, Mary Ellen and Sue.

A private service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 10 a.m., Spitler Funeral Home. Burial will be in Manato’ana Family Cemetery, Gamble Township, with Rev. Katherine Behrens officiating. There will be no public visitation.
