Where are the Christians?

The largest block of supporters of the autocrat in the White House are white evangelical Christians, but their belief system and actions seem to be in direct opposition to what Jesus requires of His followers. We, as Christians, are exhorted to act always with love, to recognize everyone as brothers and sisters, and to treat everyone the way we want to be treated; fairly, with love, respect, and acceptance. We are sent into the world to feed the hungry, comfort the sick, house the homeless, welcome the stranger, and love our neighbors as ourselves. Instead, these rogue Christians ...

Two annexations

Mexico has a better claim to large sections of the southeastern states of the U. S. than Russia has to 20% of Ukraine. Mexico’s claim stems from a historical period of territorial expansion when Mexico was forced, under duress, to sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after the Mexican American War. In that treaty, Mexico was forced to give up its possession of what are now all or parts of present-day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. The United States paid Mexico $15 million for these lands, a sum that many historians argue was a token payment for ...

The Keystone building

Friday, July 4, 2025, marked the end of a week that saw the demolition of the old Keystone building at Riverside Drive & Maynard Street. All that was left standing of that old building was the southwest corner post. Many of us recall that obstacle when passing through the corner entrance to 1928 Riverside Dr. The 107-year-old structure was a major source for memories to generations of South Siders. Beyond our recollection of the corner, is a good bit of the past. Before the Keystone building we were familiar with, a large wood-frame building stood. Constructed in 1884, it was the ...

Thanks

More than once we’ve heard family and friends say how difficult it is to hire a contractor. Too many times they find a contractor who promises dates to do a job only to be disappointed by the contractor not showing and not returning phone calls. The past three years we have attempted to hire two different contractors to construct a farm pond on our property. Both contractors promised definite times to begin the project and both were no shows. Our many phone calls went unanswered. A friend suggested we contact Jean Services from Trout Run, PA. The day after we called them, Jean ...

Unfulfilled promises

I graduated from Williamsport High School in the Class of 1962. Members of our class, born in 1944-45, were the earliest post-WWII Baby Boomers. We were also the first children born into the nuclear era, in the shadow of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Classmates with whom I car-pooled to school during our senior year frequently discussed the need for nuclear disarmament. A few months after our graduation, the Cuban missile crisis brought the US and the Soviet Union to the brink of war. This made nuclear disarmament seem even more urgent. From 1963 to 1968, the Nuclear ...

Defiling ideals

Curious that out of touch, delusional, extreme, so-called Christians eschew debate; easier to label as hypocrites those with views which differ from theirs. Our wealth-privileged, grifting, multiply-bankrupted buffoon of an age-diminished president, lacking wisdom, grace, humility, smarts, or a shred of human decency, wages a power-centric campaign against truth, only one of his numerous perceived enemies, wreaking havoc and carelessly undoing thoughtful and forward looking gains made by his predecessors. Climate change is real. Willy-nilly tariffs are regressive taxation, extremely ...
