Golf tip of the week: Identifying a golf shaft’s spine
PHOTO PROVIDED A shaft profile machine will accurately profile a shaft and indicate the spine position.
A golf shaft has a weak side and a strong side. It’s called the spine. Most clubs off the rack do not have the spine aligned properly.
A master club builder will utilize a shaft profile machine, to profile and determine the spine position.
A club tends to wobble during the swing if the shaft spine is pointing in the wrong direction. The strong side should be up, similar to identifying the spine on a fly-rod or a pole-vault stick.
A shaft profile machine is the best way to identify the spine. If the spine is set all shafts correctly in a set of clubs, the ball flight will be more consistent with every club.
Don’t forget to enjoy this great game called golf.
