Four to be inducted into Muncy Athletic Hall of Fame

Muncy announced its Class of 2021 for the Muncy High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The class consists of Bill Hughes (1959), Jordan Rishel Sarginger (2008), Galen Miller (1972) and Justin Grenoble (2001).

The foursome are slated to be inducted at halftime of Friday’s football game against South Williamsport. They will be the 71st through 74th members inducted since the Hall of Fame was established 45 years ago by Stanley T. Schuyler. The Committee’s president Roger Campbell will be in attendance to present honorary picture plaques to its four newest members.

• Hughes was a four-year letterwinner for the wrestling team from 1956-59 and was a District 4 champion in 1956 as Muncy captured the team title. In football, he lettered 1957-59 and was named an all-conference guard in 1959. He wrestled at Bloomsburg University and lettered 1960-63. He was a third-place finisher at 120 pounds at the NAIA tournament in 1960 and 1961, and took second in 1963. His teams in 1960 and 1962 captured the National NAIA team championships.

Hughes was team captain in 1963 and coached wrestling later at RL Thomas High School in Rochester, N.Y., from 1965-70, and cross country (1966). After his coaching career, he competed in several triathlons and bike championships and still competes today at the age of 80. He climbed and summited Mt. Rainer, Washington, in 2007 and Mt. Kilaminjaro in Tanzanio, Africa in 2015.

• Miller played, coached, officiated and was an administrator. In high school, he lettered in football 1969-71 and was an honorable mention all-star. He lettered in track 1969-72 and qualified for districts in 1972, competing in the high jump, 800 and mile. He lettered in basketball his junior and senior years and averaged 12.4 points per game both seasons. He was a West Branch honorable mention all-star.

In 1971-72, he played on Muncy’s volleyball team and led the 1972 team to a District 4 title and berth in the state tournament. At Lock Haven University, he was a baseball standout and lettered 1974-76. He was a first-team third baseman all-star in 1974 in the Western Conference and helped LHU win the conference title in 1976. He also pitched, and went 6-1 in his career.

As an official, Miller has officiated in District 11 sports since 2001, including officiating numerous district championships in football, baseball and softball and the Eastern Conference finals in football. He was an athletic director and coach at Northwest.

In the 1970s and 80s, he played semi-professional baseball and softball and led the 1976 West Branch League champion Watsontown Pirates in batting average (.540) and went 9-0 as a pitcher.

• Grenobl was the most versatile athlete from the Class of 2001, having excelled as a three-sport athlete in football, baseball and basketball. He was a three-year letterman in football (1998-2000) and was a West Branch Conference honorable mention tight end in 1998. In 1999, he was a first-team all-star at three different positions (tight end, linebacker and punter) as the Indians won the Eastern Conference championship. He received all-state recognition as a punter. He was all-state and a District 4 all-star in 2000 as a third-team punter.

He was invited to the Big 33 football camp in 2000. In his time with Muncy, he had 71 receptions for 1,469 yards and 22 touchdowns.

He played college football at Lycoming from 2001-04 and was a three-year letterman where he played four positions (tight end, wide receiver, full back and special teams).

In baseball, he was a four-year District 4 qualifier and helped Muncy claim Mid-Penn Conference co-championship honors in 1998. He was a three-time Mid-Penn all-star as a first-team selection and was league MVP in 2001. He’s Muncy’s all-time hits leader with 86 and he had eight home runs as Muncy hit a school record 34 in 2001.

In basketball, he was a starting forward/center and was a key player in the team qualifying for the District 4 playoffs in 2000 while playing through a severe ankle injury late in the season.

• Rishel was one of the best all-around female athletes in Muncy history, lettering all four years in field hockey, basketball and softball, setting a school record by doing so. She was the fourth 1,000-point scorer in Muncy history and was selected to the Warrior Run all-tournament team in 2005, 2006 and 2007, and Muncy Rotary Classic first team in 2007.

She was a second-team midfielder on the field hockey team in 2005 and was selected to the Muncy all-tournament team in 2007. She received District 4 Outstanding Female Award in 2008, Sun-Gazette top female senior award in 2008 and received the Paul F. Gresh Memorial award in 2008.

At Mansfield University, she played a year of field hockey before concentrating on softball. She was a four-year letter winner in softball as an outfielder. She started 22 of 26 games her freshman year, 14 of 23 as a sophomore while hitting .357, 16 of 24 as a junior and 20 of 25 her senior year. She was a PSAC all-star all four years.
