Local roundup: Persing, McRae both post double-doubles in Montgomery’s senior night win

Montgomery played its best game this season and seniors Faith Persing and Taylor McRae each produced double-doubles on senior night as the Red Raiders thumped Bucktail, 47-17, in girls basketball on Friday night.

Persing scored 16 points and made 10 steals while McRae had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Montgomery avenged a previous defeat and stormed out to a 19-1 first-quarter lead which grew to 34-10 by halftime. Falin Reynolds added nine points for Montgomery while Makenzie Wagner scored 10 for Bucktail.

Jersey Shore freshman Peyton Dincher scored a career-high 29 points and drained five 3-pointers as Jersey Shore defeated rival Central Mountain, 50-30. Dincher’s 29 points are the most by an area player in a game this season and helped Jersey Shore improve to 8-6. Cailyn Schall added six points and the Bulldogs led 50-26 after 3 quarters. Kiahna Jones scored 13 for Central Mountain.

South Williamsport freshman Lacey Kriebel also was feeling it from long-range, hitting four 3-pointers and scoring a career-high 17 points to help South Williamsport defeat St. John Neumann, 60-39. South finished with seven 3-pointers and had balanced scoring with Piper Minier (14) and Claudia Green (13) also reaching double figures. The Mounties (13-2, 10-0) scored 34 first-half points and stayed undefeated in the Mid-Penn.

Breanna Bobak scored 15 points and Hughesville played strong defense as it defeated Montoursville, 43-25. Bobak came back strong after missing the last three games and freshman Ava Snyder scored 10 points. Alli Anstadt added seven while Sydnie Stone and Alaina Marchioni each scored six for Montoursville.

Behind a game and career-high 19 points from Sydney Bolinsky, Lewisburg defeated Danville, 53-25. Sophie Kilbride made four steals, six assists and eight rebounds, in addition to scoring 10 points. Bolinsky, Maddie Materne and Keeley Baker all had five rebounds each for the Green Dragons (7-9).

• Penn College narrowly fell to Gallaudet, 68-65, in men’s basketball United East action. The win gave Gallaudet its first victory as Penn College fell to 4-11 overall and 4-4 in the league.

Gavin Barrett led Penn College with 15 points while adding five rebounds. Corey Blackwell came up just shy of a double-double as he scored 10 and grabbed seven rebounds.

Gallaudet was led by Lance Wood’s 23 points and 13 rebounds.

• Penn College lost a close United East contest to Gallaudet, 50-45, in women’s basketball. Rachel Teats led Penn College with 18 points and Kayleigh Miller added eight. Jersey Shore graduate Aubrey Stetts and Loyalsock graduate Cassi Kuhns each scored six points apiece.

Gallaudet was led by Cassidy Perry’s 14-point, 15-rebound double-double.

The Wildcats (4-11) held an 11-5 lead after the first quarter, but Gallaudet took a 19-18 lead into the half.

• As the Warriors get ready to kick off the spring portion of the 2021-22 season, the Lycoming College women’s tennis team was selected to finish seventh in the MAC Freedom Women’s Tennis Coaches’ Preseason Poll.

With 12 votes each, the Warriors are tied with King’s for seventh in the poll. Stevens (45) is selected to finish first with four first-place votes. Wilkes (42) with two first-place votes, Misericordia (37) with one first-place vote, DeSales (34) with a first-place vote, Arcadia (22) and FDU-Florham (20) round out the eight-team poll.

The Warriors completed the fall season with a 3-4 overall record. Freshman Rei Saar, a Montoursville graduate, led the team with an 11-1 singles record, going 7-0 in dual meets at the No. 5 singles position, and was on a nine-match winning streak at the end of the fall.

• The Lycoming men’s tennis team was selected to finished seventh in the MAC Freedom Tennis Coaches’ Preseason poll

The Warriors received 17 votes in the poll. Stevens (49) was the unanimous selection to finish first with seven first-place votes. Wilkes (40), FDU-Florham (35), DeSales (33), Arcadia (22) and King’s (20) round out the top six placements. Misericordia (8) finishes off the poll.

Under 11th-year coach LeRoy Bear, the Warriors finished the fall session with a 2-3 record after defeating Albright College, 8-1, in their last meet of the fall. Senior Casey Haas, a Montoursville graduate, and junior Jason Anderson tied to lead the Warriors in singles wins, each posting a 3-4 record. Sophomore Luke Leach, a Wellsboro graduate, led the men with a 4-5 doubles record.

• The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its All-Academic team and individual lists and the Lock Haven University women’s cross country team received team honors, while three student-athletes were honored with individual All-Academic awards.

As a team the Bald Eagles posted a 3.334 cumulative GPA and placed fifth at the 2022 Division II Atlantic Region Cross Country Championships, including two All-Region performers in Cadie Kiser and Morgan Perry.

LHU placed three runners on the prestigious list. Kiser, Perry and Elaina Klinger.
