STATE COLLEGE — Eddie Micheletti Jr. slugged a ball out to the center wall and drove in three baserunners in the seventh inning. While Williamsport’s dugout was cheering, State College was dead quiet.

The Spikes, too, were silent for a long time by that point. Micheletti’s three RBIs accounted for just half of the scoring in the frame as the Crosscutters’ bats were heating up throughout the night and up and down the order.

After putting up seven unanswered runs down the stretch, Williamsport routed State College, 11-3 at Medlar Field Friday to take a 2-0 lead in the opening series of the season.

“We were hitting the ball hard early, it’s just a matter of finding holes and getting things going,” Crosscutters manager Jesse Litsch said. “It’s like anything, you get one hit, another hit, another hit, it’s just something that keeps going. These guys feed off of each other and that’s what makes it fun.”

Travis Holt had a solid MLB Draft League debut with an RBI and a triple against State College on opening night. And at Medlar field, the designated hitter remained a strong one at No. 2 in the lineup.

He recorded the first hit of the night for the Crosscutters in the top of the third with a single to left-center, then stole second and third on an error after. Villanova junior Jack O’Reilly drove in Holt with a double out to center for the first run of the game.

“He’s gonna be consistent, that’s something we noticed early. He’s a guy we’ll rely on throughout the summer and go from there,” Litsch said on Holt. “Everyone throughout the lineup proved something, even the guys off the bench. It was fun to see it. It was a group effort from the bullpen to the defense to the hitting. Those are the fun games.”

O’Reilly, along with Logan Flood, both had two doubles apiece. On the night, Williamsport knocked five doubles altogether.

“I was just seeing the ball well, just trying to put good swings on pitches I knew I could hit,” O’Reilly said. “Went in our favor today, found some grass out there, which is always good. It was a good team win, offense played great.”

The defense complimented said offense. With a one-run lead, Williamsport knocked down a 1-2-3 in the bottom half with a strikeout from Austin Marozas.

The Crosscutters’ fielding has let up just three runs in their first two games after a combined shutout from seven pitchers on opening day and Friday’s road contest.

“Our pitchers are doing great. They’re keeping the ball down, reducing contact and getting strikeouts when we need them with runners in scoring position,” O’Reilly said. “The defense has been solid, up the middle especially in terms of returning balls in play.”

Flood led off the fourth inning with a double, and with two outs, Dante Leach ripped a double of his own way out to the center wall, just short of a homer. Flood was driven in on the play, elevating Williamsport to a two-run cushion.

Through the first three innings, the Crosscutters were getting outhit 2-0. The order started cooking through the middle frames, and after Leach’s RBI, Williamsport had twice the hits State College made.

By the end of the night, Williamsport outhit State College, 13-6.

“They’re gonna feed off each other. Hopefully they keep staying hot,” Litsch said on the batting. “There’s gonna be good games, there’s gonna be bad games. It’s just a matter of trying to stay consistent. Working with the hitting coaches and working from there.”

The Spikes found their first run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ben Columbus walked and worked his way to third before Daniel Irisarri made a base hit out past the shortstop to bring him in and cut it to a one-run game.

Williamsport gained some breathing room after pouring on another two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Those runs came from the same bats that were red-hot all night.

O’Reilly smacked his second RBI double, followed by another double from Flood — his third in two days — out to shallow left-center to tack on another RBI and take a three-run advantage. Lucas Piper added an RBI for Williamsport in the seventh.

“I think as the season progresses, the pitchers have an advantage at the beginning, but as the offense sees more pitches, we’re going to start to get into that rhythm and you could see that a little bit tonight in our guys,” O’Reilly said. ”

Back to the top of the order with runners on the corners and one out for Williamsport in the sixth, Matthew Etzel made a base hit to the left-center infield, driving in the lead runner. With the bases loaded after, Josue Urdanetta unleashed a two RBI single to vault ahead further.

State College found its second run in the sixth inning when Carlos Aranda led off with a triple and Tommy Schroeder forced him in on a grounder. Jake Mastillo added an RBI in the eighth.

“The first practice, we gelled together Day 1 and I think it’s definitely a fun group,” Litsch said. “They like each other and it’s easy to play when everyone is doing things together as a team. They’ve played the game as a team well.”
