Roundup: Moore has hat trick in South girls soccer win over Benton

Ella Moore recorded a hat trick as South Williamsport defeated Benton, 6-2, in girls soccer. Althea Street was in goal for the Mounties, recording three saves.

The Mounties’ also received goals from Piper Minier, Abby Akers and Addison Morrison.

Jordyn Abernathy scored the game’s only goal as Wellsboro defeated Port Allegheny, 1-0. The Green Hornets out-shot Port Allegheny, 15-8, as Annie Gehman recorded eight saves in goal for the shutout win.

Central Mountain fell to Tyrone, 3-0. Tyrone put on a lot of pressure in the second half. Central Mountain had opportunities, but Tyrone’s keeper came up with solid saves to keep it scoreless. Tyrone then scored two goals to take a lead.

Lily Hendricks, Julia Smith, Traci Thompson and Briley Lewis did what they could to get the ball into the attacking third in the second half, but Central Mountain wasn’t able to score a goal.

• Lewisburg blanked Loyalsock in boys soccer, 4-0, as Darrien Svilokos scored twice and Alfred Romano had a goal and assist for the Green Dragons.

Lewisburg fired 13 shots on goal as Chris Cooley came up with nine saves for the Lancers, playing well against the Green Dragons.

Lewisburg led 2-0 in the first half. Cohen Hoover had a goal and Reese Dieffenderfer and Noah Pawling both had assists.

Seth Yoder scored off an assist by Dominic Ballo in the first half to lift Milton to a 1-0 win against Central Columbia. The Black Panthers’ Jonah Strobel was in goal, recording six saves.

Central Mountain tied a good Warrior Run team, 3-3, in boys soccer. Warrior Run took a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game before Peyton Jones for Jack Grieco for his first goal to tie it up. Jones then scored himself off a Nate Brinker assist for a 2-1 lead before the Defenders made it 2-2 heading into the half.

Asher Talbot played Jones, who put his second goal away, on a right-footed volley for a 3-2 lead. Warrior Run tied the game up with a free kick with just five seconds remaining in the game.

• In girls tennis, Williamsport looked strong in a 5-0 win against Shikellamy, winning all five matches in straight sets. Abby Robertson, Allyson McCann and Kayla Bloch were victorious in singles, dropping just eight combined games.

The doubles teams of Breanna Chicas and Emlyn Kinley and Chloe Campbell and Shamarya Robinson also won in convincing fashion, each taking their matches with 6-2, 6-0 margins.

South Williamsport also put together an outstanding performance, blanking Towanda, 5-0 and winning all its matches in straight sets. South improved to 3-1 as Eve Jackson, Sadie Stahl and Livy Harvey all won their singles matches in impressive fashion. The same went for the doubles teams of Olivia Jackson and Emma McLaughlin and Emily Holtzapple and Sidney Ertel as they dropped just five games in their victories.

Kayla Probert, Alexis Lowery and Bella English swept the singles matches as Bucktail defeated Muncy, 4-1. Chevelle Bauman and Brie Myers were victorious in doubles for Muncy, winning a hard-fought three set match, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-3.

Jersey Shore won all five matches in straight sets as it blanked Milton, 5-0. Peyton Dincher, Celia Shemory and Ella Gerst won singles matches with Dincher and Shemory not dropping a game in either set. The doubles teams of Rahel Hartman and Breanna Porter and Anna Lanksa and Jaymison Stellfox also cruised with the latter not dropping a game in their match.

Ellie Gundy’s comeback, three-set victory at No. 3 singles highlighted Central Mountain’s 5-0 win against Selinsgrove. Gundy lost the first set, 6-3 but came back and won the next two, 6-4, 6-3. Zeta Bush and Teresa Temple won straight-set singles matches. The teams of Bree Weaver and Emma Harry, and Catie Lugg and Ellie Harry also were victorious in straight sets.

Montgomery blanked St. John Neumann, 5-0. At No. 1 singles, Sloan Wooten won, 6-0, 6-3, and Falin Reynolds picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.

Sarah Buck defeated Marissa Griess at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0 as Hughesville beat North Penn-Liberty, 5-0. Kylie Kilgore won at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

• Williamsport’s boys cross country team continued dominating and improved to 6-0 as it easily defeated Southern Columbia, Central Columbia and Shamokin in a quad meet. Williamsport swept the top five and placed six runners in the top 10. Ethan Holcomb won in a time of 17 minutes, 21 seconds. Patrick Nardi, Holden Furey, Pence Kieser and Cashlin Rogers rounded out the top five.

The girls placed three runners in the top 15 of their race with Linah van Emrick taking 12th.

Central Mountain’s girls and boys teams both finished second as a team at a tri-meet at Lock Haven with Loyalsock and Danville. Abbey Wolfe was Central Mountain’s top finisher by running a 20:34.50. Autumn Garman ran a 23:57.40 and Sophia Croce ran a 24:38.50. Sofia Dressler finished in 25:39.20.

On the boys side, Sam Wible ran a 20:02.30 for the Wildcats. Colby Heverly ran a 22:07.70, Damian Winner ran a 22:23.70 and Skylar Small finished with a time of 22:52.90.

At the Bear Mountain Run recently at Lock Haven, Cowanesque Valley’s Kristian Mizdail took fourth in 16:15.00 on the boys side and Williamsport’s Ethan Holcomb was a seventh-place finisher (16:40.30). Jersey Shore’s Raiden Francis finished 10th in 16:51.00.

In girls competition, Warrior Run’s Sage Dunkleberger took sixth (20:46.10) and South Williamsport freshman Elyse Knoebel was an 11th-place finisher (21:06.80). Central mountain’s Abbey Wolfe took third in 19:55.40.

• North Penn-Mansfield was led by Andrew Green, who shot a 78, in a NTL meet. Green’s 78 was the result of nine pars and two birdies. Eli Stein shot a 93 for the Tigers. Wellsboro’s Hayden Zuchowski and Hannalee Cleveland each shot a 92 and Blake Hamblin shot a 94.

Cowanesque Valley’s top performer was Jordan Vargeson, who shot an 89, and Nick West shot a 98.

Central Mountain narrowly lost to Selinsgrove, 165-168, in a dual meet at Susquehanna Valley Country Club in a PHAC match. Gardner Fravel and Peyton Newlen both had 41s for Central Mountain in the nine-hole contest.

Brayden Blackwell and Stevan Fisher both had 43s and Steven Heverly shot a 45.

• Mansfield University fifth-year men’s basketball coach John Szentesy announced the newest addition to the program with the hiring of assistant coach Mike Rell. Rell, who was a guard for the Mounties from 2018-20, returns to the MU after spending two seasons as the men’s assistant basketball coach at Lorain County Community College.

• Wellsboro fell to Williamson, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-14) in girls volleyball. Paige Logsdon led Wellsboro wtih seven kills.

Northeast Bradford defeated Cowanesque Valley, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-18). Lily Vargeson had seven assists, two kills and an ace, Maggie McClaren had three aces and a kill, Lexi Shenk had two kills, Autumn Mead had two kills, Arianna Cary had two kills and libero Toni Clark had 19 passes.

In Loyalsock’s recent loss to Galeton (3-0), Gabby Breaubrun had five digs, Emma Belcher had three kills and two digs, Jadea Toth had two assist, two digs and an ace, Molly Clune had two aces and a kill, Karlynn Emerick had four assists and two digs, Molly Garrison had three aces and two kills and Shea Bower had two digs.

• Wiley Egan scored off an assist by Kaelynn Sheetz in the first half, but Geneva scored three unanswered goals to defeat Penn College in women’s soccer, 3-1.

The Wildcats were held to 15 shots, nine of which came in the second half. Nicole Lichtinger had seven saves.

• In the home opener, sophomore Katie Maguire scored her first career goal for the Lycoming College field hockey team in a 3-1 loss to Houghton University.

Maguire’s goal came at 22:15 after a quick substitution found her at center field, ready to catch a pass from sophomore Halie Woodring, before dribbling it to the circle for the shot from left of the goal, cutting the score in half.

Houghton (2-1 overall) found themselves on the scoreboard twice before Maguire’s goal, the first at 10:49 by Jace Hunzinger and then again at 17:25 in the second from Peyton Bentley. The Highlanders’ final goal came in the final 12 minutes from Ciciley Haslem.

• Sophomore Rei Saar, a Montoursville graduate, led the Lycoming College women’s tennis team with a season-opening singles win, as the team fell to Alfred University, 8-1.

Saar posted a dramatic come-from-behind win at No. 3 singles, falling in the first set, 3-6, before coming back with a 6-0 win to set up a superset tiebreaker, where she downed Anna Gwozdz, 10-3.

Freshman Greta Kimble, a South Williamsport graduate, also reached a tiebreaker, winning her second set, 6-2, before falling in the tiebreaker, 10-8, at No. 6 singles to Alexis Giordano.

• Penn College picked up its first win of the season in women’s volleyball with a 3-0 win over Clarks Summit in non-conference action. Penn College cruised in the first set, 25-14, and then won the second, 25-11, and third, 25-16.

Christine Limbert had a game-high eight kills for the Wildcats, Cheyenne Stein had a game-best 17 assists and seven aces, and Coryn Oswald picked up a game-high digs.

• In girls volleyball, North Penn-Liberty edged Troy, 3-2 (17-25, 25-13, 25-11, 17-25, 15-6). Aubrey Pequignot had 22 assists and 10 digs, Saige Lehman had 18 service receptions,14 digs and 11 kills and Darby Stetter had 15 service receptions to go with 13 kills. Payton Chapel led Liberty wtih 20 digs and McKenna Lightner had 11 digs.
