JERSEY SHORE–As a young child, Peyton Dincher wrote out her basketball goals. Then she started relentlessly working toward achieving them.
Without sacrifice, those words are just those. Glory comes with a price and Dincher always has been eager to pay it.
Thursday night, all that work produced some more impressive dividends as Dincher joined an exclusive club. The work continues but that a moment the Jersey Shore senior experienced.
Dincher scored a game-high 24 points and reached 1,000 career points in record time, helping Jersey Shore defeat Mount Carmel, 52-31. The 2023 first team all-state selection is the quickest in school history to produce 1,000 points, doing so in just the fifth game of her junior season, her 56th overall. Most importantly to her, Dincher helped Jersey Shore (4-1) win its fourth consecutive game.
“When I was really young, this was definitely a goal,” Dincher said. “Now it’s out of the way. We’re just ready to win.”

Jersey Shore has done that a lot since Dincher’s freshman season. The Bulldogs won three games the previous year before making 10 and seven-win improvements Dincher’s first two seasons. Dincher became the program’s first, first-time all-state selection a year ago as Jersey Shore won 20 games, captured its first league title and won its first state tournament game since 2001.
Opponents have done everything possible to slow her, but Dincher keeps grinding away and stays one step ahead. That was the case again Thursday as she scored 17 second-half points, made seven of her eight second-half shots and added seven rebounds with two assists.
“It doesn’t happen by accident as anybody knows. It’s human nature to want good things, but very few of us want to put the work in,” Jersey Shore coach Mike Schall said. “Peyton is the absolute hardest worker, probably in the area. She deserves the individual accolades, but she and her teammates know she wants the W just as much.”
That became especially apparent after Dincher reached the milestone with 74 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Teammates rushed to embrace Dincher, and she posed for photos with her parents. All the while, Dincher looked like a player more eager to keep playing than celebrating.
Right on cue, Dincher went back to work, scored Jersey Shore’s first 13 fourth quarter points and helped the Bulldogs turn what was a tenuous three-point game at halftime into a rout. The Bulldogs left 48-23 when Dincher exited to a loud ovation from fans and students who had a countdown to 1,000 points going on the wall behind the gym’s far basket.

“I just wanted to get the win,” Dincher said. “I just wanted to play.”
Dincher played outstanding as did her teammates who dominated the second half. Jersey Shore scored 20 third quarter points and outscored Mount Carmel 37-19 during the last two quarters. Cailyn Schall scored nine third quarter points, helping fuel the run and Jocelyn McCracken set the early tone, scoring 11 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and adding four steals.
Celia Shemory and Sophia Stover helped spark a defense which held a team to fewer than 35 points for a fourth straight contest and Dincher let the game come to her, rather than forcing anything. She best highlighted that after sinking a 3-pointer which put Jersey Shore up 20-13 early in the third quarter and her at 999 career points.
While virtually everyone in the gym was thinking about 1,000 points, Dincher stayed focused on the game and did not attempt another shot for six minutes. Instead, she helped Jersey Shore continue surging by playing facilitator, twice finding McCracken inside for baskets.
“I just have to lock in and look at the hoop and just play the game, just play basketball,” Dincher said. “That’s what my coach says and that’s what we do.”

When it was time to attack, that’s what Dincher did. The moment came late in the third quarter when Dincher received a pass in the right corner. She dribbled back toward the top of the key before cutting into the lane and beating a double team toward the basket. Dincher then banked in a layup as some fans jumped for joy and almost all delivered a standing ovation.
“I’m really thankful,” Dincher said. “I appreciate everybody.”
Her teammates and coaches appreciate the way Dincher keeps working to improve her game. She has become a matchup nightmare because she can play virtually every position. She can rain 3-pointers outside or beat defenders off the dribble or post up.
Dincher unleashed that arsenal after scoring her 1,000th point and made seven straight shots at one point, almost all in different fashions. She drove inside, she hit a 3-pointer, she hit a pull-up jumper, and she added two free throws. A player who has averaged 18.1 points per game keeps climbing and that is exactly the plan.
“She’s going to take this game wherever she wants it to take her. There’s another level to her game, as far as reading the floor and reading attacks,” Schall said. “We’re working on that all the time and she’s already progressing five games into the season. She embraces winning basketball.”

So do her teammates and that is why this group has meshed so well the past three seasons. Each player does her part well and everything came together in the second half when Jersey Shore made 13 of its first 18 shots. The ball moved as fast as the players and Jersey Shore made sure Dincher’s night became a perfect one, ensuring themselves of a 37th win these last two seasons and five games.
“Everybody did great,” Dincher said. “We all contributed.”
“They played more instinctive basketball, reading the floor in front of them and attacking,” Schall said. “We had the same types of attacks in the first half and great looks, but I think we were a little tight. They took care of business in the second half and freed up after that individual milestone.”
