Montoursville major softball forces winner-take-all final
Montoursville’s major softball team is now a win away from advancing to the state tournament. Montoursville earned an exciting 2-1 win against Minersville on Saturday in the Section 3 championship game, forcing a winner-take-all rematch on Sunday in Sunbury at 2 p.m.
Montoursville scored both its runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead. Minersville cut the deficit to one with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Harlee Hagemeyer and Montoursville’s defense played great in the sixth inning to prevent Minersville from tying the game.
Montoursville out-hit Minersville, 6-3.
Hagemeyer threw all six innings and struck out four with just one walk. Minersville’s run was unearned.
Liz Kane and Maura Thompson were a solid 1-2 punch in the lineup with both driving in key runs for the team. Danni DeTato led Montoursville’s offense at the plate, going 2 for 3.
