Local roundup: Numerous area runners have XC success at Lasagna Invitational
In cross country, Numerous area runners saw success at the Wyalusing Lasagna Invitational. Wellsboro’s Lauren Kosek was the top girls runner as she ran a 19:41.60, the only runner to break 20 minutes. North Penn-Mansfield’s Jaci Fairchild ran a 20:42.90 for second place and Sullivan County’s Zoey Reese wsa 111th with a time of 23:16.10.
On the boys side, Canton’s Lawrence Halbfoerster was second with a time of 17:12.10, just nine seconds behind champion Oliver Heintzelman of Northwest. Wellsboro’s Max Macias took third in 17:15.70 and North Penn-Mansfield’s James Knefley took fifth (18:11.70). Wellsboro also saw Henry Whitney take eighth in 19:04.00. Sullivan County’s top finishers were Andrew Kapek (16th, 19:58.10), Chase Preston (17th, 20:08.10) and Carter Blasi (18th, 20:12.90).
Jersey Shore recently had success in a meet against Mount Carmel, Montoursville, Mifflinburg and Mount Carmel.Samuel Davis was the Bulldogs’ top runner with a time of 19:35.70 and Dekin McDermott ran a 20:03.60. On the girls side, Madelyn Fleegle ran a 26:59.80 and Morgan Waldman ran a 27:28.10.
• Bucktail defeated Wellsboro, 4-1. Eva Sockman won at No. 1 singles for the Bucks over Olivia Gage, 6-1, 6-1 and Kendall Wagner won, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles for Bucktail. Wellsboro’s victory came at No. 2 doubles where Serenity Mosher and Angie Cory beat Carrie Ditty and Riley Salizzoni, 6-4, 7-5 (7-4).
• Freshman Kayvan Shams, a South Williamsport graduate, and senior Luke Taylor each won their first career singles matches to lead the Lycoming College men’s tennis team, which fell to Penn College, 5-2.
Shams beat Penn College’s Seth Priestman, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5 singles tournament. Taylor won his No. 6 singles match against Hunter Knosky. In the first set, Taylor matched Knosky’s efforts hit-for-hit, winning the tiebreaker 9-7 before he dominated in the second set with a 6-1 win.
Seniors Matthew Baldridge and Mohamed Ebeid won their No. 2 doubles match, 6-2, against Penn College’s Matt Williams and Seth Priestman, securing Lycoming’s first victory of the day.
• The Lock Haven volleyball team opened the 2024 season by competing in the Cedarville Invitational on the campus of Cedarville. The Bald Eagles fell to Cedarville 3-0 before downing Central State 3-0. Lock Haven opens the season with a 1-1 record after the split and will wrap up the Cedarville Invitational tomorrow afternoon (Sept. 7) by taking on Saginaw Valley State at noon.
Evie Jane Rembold led the way with seven kills against Cedarville. Against Central State, Emma Kelly, Rembold, and Avery Beall powered the offense with nine, eight, and seven kills, respectively.
