After breaking district record, Williamsport 1,600 relay team confident heading to state meet

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport’s Alex Takach was part of the Millionaire’s 1,600 relay team which won district gold and set the District 4 record on Saturday alongside Aiden Everett, Brayden Ungard and Tevin Williams. That foursome is state bound.

It was the final event being run on Saturday and Williamsport’s four relay team members were hoping to send one last Millionaire representative to Shippensburg for the state meet.

Once Brayden Ungard received the handoff from Aiden Everett on the second leg, the Millionaires were in a great position after Everett’s 48.67-second split.

And after Ungard ran a 51.88-second second leg, Williamsport found itself in a solid spot. Each handoff inched Williamsport close and closer to something special.

The Millionaires not only won the District 4 Class AAA title in the 1,600 relay, the Millionaires also set the district record in a time of 3:19.39, breaking the record Shamokin set two years prior by 0.29 seconds.

That 1,600 relay team was one final group for the Millionaires at states as Williamsport saw its relay team join five individuals heading to Shippensburg.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport’s Kye Diakite, center, qualified for the state meet at Shippensburg in the 110 hurdles. He’s one of four Millionaires heading to states individually.

“A lot of hard work and our coaching was great,” Ungard said about Williamsport’s overall success.

Williamsport’s 1,600 relay team consists of Everett, Ungard, Alex Takach and Tevin Williams. Everett, Takach and Williams are also all state-bound individually.

Takach is Williamsport’s only two-event competitor on the boys side, qualifying in both the 100 and 200. Everett will be competing in the triple jump and Williams is heading to states in the 400.

In addition, Williamsport’s Corodza Minor qualified for states in the discus and Kye Diakite won gold in the 110 hurdles to secure a trip to Shippensburg.

Ungard noted that the Millionaires got off to a solid start in Saturday’s relay and kept it up through the final legs.

“It was a big confidence boost to see that big gap at the start. We knew we had it after that,” Ungard said. “We knew our legs would come together. We had a lot of guys doing a lot of thigns today, so we were happy to see it all come together at the end after the first leg started it off.”

And setting a new district time also helped give the team a ton of confidence going into Shippensurg.

“It gave us a big confidence boost. We all felt really good but tired today, so we feel at states we can really make some noise,” Ungard said. “I feel like the fact that not only are we all young, ubt we al really like to win (is a strength). We all push ourselves as hard as we can. we always put it all out there.”

The Millionaires are seeded 12th in the state preliminaries.

For Takach, he knows competing in the 100 and 200 at states will put him up against some of the best runners in Pennsylvania.

The Millionaire is seeded 10th in the 100 dash preliminaries in Class AAA with his district-winning time of 10.81. If Takach PRs at states, he has a solid chance of reaching the podium. The top time in the field is Wilkes-Barre’s Timothy Leonard, who ran a 10.60.

Takach also has a high seed in the 200 by being ninth with a time of 21.85. Again, a PR would see Takach be on the podium. The top time is Isaach Yarnell of Hollidaysburg’s 21.16. But Takach is within 0.11 seconds of the fifth-seeded runner.

“Obviously PA is really fast and I know it’s going to be a challenge, but I set a goal at the beginning of the season that I was going to medal at states and I’m keeping that goal in mind,” Takach said. “I’m going to work as hard as I can this week in practice and hope I can medal at states.”

Everett is seeded 12th in the triple jump after he qualified with a jump of 45 feet, 5 1/4 inches. The top mark belongs to New Oxford’s Brayden Billman (47-10 1/4).

In the discus, Minor’s district-winning throw of 157-4 has him seeded 16th in the field as he’s nearly 30 feet behind the top seed of Gateway’s Dino Nadarevic (187-0).

In the 110 hurdles, Diakite is seeded 25th after he won with a time of 15.02. The fastest runner in the event is Palmyra senior Tyler Burgess, who ran a 13.67.

Diakite is hoping to better his time at Shippensburg.

“PR,” Diakite said as to his expectations at states. “It would be great to make it to the finals there.”

Diakite added that he’s changed things throughout the season with how he’s approached the hurdles, and feels that it’s paid off late in the season.

“I progressed a lot. I changed my hurdle form, changed my steps to approach the hurdles,” Diakite said. “It’s almost a whole new thing.”

Williams enters the 400 prelims seeded 33rd after he ran a time of 49.78 at districts. Harriton senior Ade Lloyd has the top time of 46.46 and is the only runner in Class AAA to have run a sub-47 time.

Starting at $2.99/week.
