WELL REPRESENTED: 6 individuals, 5 relay teams from Hughesville head to state meet

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Hughesville’s Kylie Temple competes in the 300 hurdles during last year’s District 4 championships. Temple is one of six individual Hughesville athletes who qualified for this year’s state championships at Shippensburg. Hughesville has six individual athletes and five relay teams heading to Shippensburg.

Those in attendance at Williamsport on Saturday for the District 4 track and field championships heard Hughesville athletes getting their name called for the podium frequently.

Well, more like a lot.

Hughesville had numerous top-8 finishers on Saturday between individuals and relay teams, but more importantly, the Spartans have a lot of athletes qualify between Thursday and Saturday for Shippensburg.

Six individuals and five relay teams to be specific. Hughesville has solid track and field teams in boys and girls competition, and it was evident at Williamsport.

Hughesville’s Spencer Stine (100 and 200), Tyce Shaner (3,200, 1,600 and 800), Wyatt Laubacher (3,200), Shea McCusker (1,600), Kylie Temple (300 hurdles and 200) and Katelyn Temple (400) all qualified individually for Shippensburg.

DAVE KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette Shea McCusker of Hughesville competes in the 1,600 during the Lock Haven High School Classic this year. McCusker qualified for the state meet at Shippensburg.

“It’s amazing. It’s so special knowing that I have such a great group of teammates. I’m either going to states with or someone helped me get to states or trained with me the whole season,” Kylie Temple said. “It’s just really amazing to have such a good group of kids to be a part of a team with.”

All three of Hughesville’s girls relay teams are state-bound. The 400 relay team — which broke the school record at districts — is comprised of Katelyn Temple, Sierra DeWire, Avery Puderbach and Kylie Temple.

The girls 1,600 relay team is made up of Katelyn Temple, Elizabeth Wolfe, Alexis Kurzawa and Kylie Temple and the 3,200 relay team is made up of Leah Lehman, Elizabeth Wolfe, Grace Fortin and Vivian Draper.

On the boys side, Tyce Shaner, Carter Sherwood, Tristan Kurzawa and Shea McCusker make up the 3,200 relay team and Luke Stutzman, Spencer Stine, Carter Gormont and Sam Haddon make up the 400 relay team.

Kylie Temple and Shaner are both heading to states in four total events and Stine is heading in three different events.

CHRIS MANNING/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Hughesville’s Tyce Shaner qualified for the state meet this year in three events at the state meet individually: the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

“I’m pretty happy. A lot of work in the summer really just dedicated to going to states,” Stine said. “So I think it’s paying off at this point.”

The six individual state qualifiers and five relay teams going to states speaks to the amount of talent Hughesville has throughout its roster on the track.

McCusker and Shaner are both state-bound in the 1,600 as well.

“It’s awesome. We’re doing things that have never happened,” McCusker said. “It’s just awesome to see and amazing to have that.”

McCusker is hoping to reach the podium.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Hughesville’s Katelyn Temple is one of six Spartans that qualified for the state meet individually. Temple qualified in the 400 and is also part of the Hughesville’s 400 and 1,600 relay teams.

“Just to medal. I’m in a position where I think I can get a top-5 finsh, so get out there and compete,” McCusker said.

Kylie Temple and her 400 relay teammates seem to frequently break their school record. A year ago in Shippensurg, she was part of the 400 relay team which broke the school record.

In April, they broke the record again with a low 50s time. On Saturday, the foursome cracked the 50-second barrier and set it once again.

“It’s really exciting. We broke it last year at states, so it was really exciting to break it at districts with this team,” Kylie Temple said. “We’re really excited. We dropped like almost a second o and everything was a little bit cleaner today. It just felt really good.”

The Spartans’ girls 3,200 relay team is seeded 12th while Warrior Run — who won district gold — is seeded No. 1 after winning districts with a time of 9:21.47. The Spartans ran a time of 9:47.50.

The Spartans’ girls 400 relay team has a very good chance of medaling. That group ran a time of 49.38 at districts which currently has them seeded eighth at states. North Catholic’s 48.07 is the top time in the field.

“Knowing that all of these kids and some great teams in our districts that we’re competing against are going to states and knowing how close we are with those kids in the states and teams around us, it’s really exciting going in knowing we’re a competitor,” Kylie Temple said. “It’s not like we’re just there to go to states. We’re there to compete and we’re there to win and that’s just really exciting.”

Katelyn Temple is seeded 15th in the 400 (58.88). The top time belongs to Laurel senior’s Tori Atkins (55.35) although Warrior Run senior Raygan Lust is seeded fourth (57.12).

Kylie Temple has a chance to win state gold in the 300 hurdles. Her district-winning time — and district-record time — of 43.67 is the top time in the field. Her time is also the only sub-45.

Hughesville’s 1,600 relay team in girls competition is seeded second with a 3:59.88. They’re one of only three relay teams in at states who ran a sub-4-minute 1,600 alongside Warrior Run (3:57.15) and Laurel (3:59.95).

On the boys side, the Spartans’ 3,200 relay team has the second-best time in the state meet with a 7:56.79 and are behind only Quaker Valley’s 7:51.89. Hughesville is also one of only three relay teams to have run a sub-8-minute time with Lewisburg in the mix too (7:58.14).

Stine is seeded 21st in the 100 prelims. Mercyhurst Prep’s Vincent Feliciano is the top runner with a time of 10.72.

In the 1,600, McCusker is seeded fifth wtih a time of 4:16.40 — just two seconds behind Lewisburg senior Jonathan Hess — and Shaner is seeded 10th (4:21.55). If both Spartans run outstanding times, they have a chance to share the podium together.

Shaner has a chance to medal in the 800 as well as he’s seeded eighth in the event with his district time of 1:57.30. The top times belong to Quaker Valley duo Clark LaLomia (1:55.33) and Jackson Pethel (1:55.44).

Laubacher is seeded 13th in the 3,200 after his district time of 9:40.54. The top time in the event belongs to Mohawk senior Jaxon Schoedel (9:11.88).

Hughesville’s 400 relay team is seeded 25th.

The Spartans have a strong group of athletes in track and field, and no doubt they have the ability to see a few trips to the podium on Saturday afternoon.
