West End 15-16s improve to 3-0 at Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament

West End’s 15-16-year-old all-stars played solid offensively and defensively in Wednesday’s 10-0, five-inning win against Millville, New Jersey, at the Mid-Atlantic Regional all-star tournament at Logue Field.
Noah Kirby earned the win on the mound as the right-handed pitcher gave up just one hit and no runs over three innings of work with four strikeouts and only two walks. Nate Crow threw two innings of zero-run ball in relief with only two hits allowed and a strikeout.
“I’m very happy with both Noah and Nate on the mound today. Noah hasn’t thrown much this year being a catcher so working with getting him some innings and he threw the ball well,” West End manager Marc Hess said. “Nate came in and threw a lot better than his last outing in states. Found the strike zone and kept throwing strikes.”
Jaxson March collected three hits in three at bats to help propel the offense with singles in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
West End got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after Zack Neill doubled to centerfield, march singled up the middle and Mason Hess singled down the left-field line. That was followed by a single by LJ Hill into left as each one scored a run.
In total, West End collected 11 hits as Hess and Neill each had multiple. West End also didn’t commit a single error. Millville was led by Max Richter’s 2 for 2 performance.
“It’s always good when you feel comfortable wtih all 14 players at the plate in any situation,” Hess said. “We hit the ball again today Nos. 1 through 10 and that makes hard outs for the opponents when there are no soft spots in the lineup.”
Neill had two doubles for West End while Jaymes Carpenter added a double.
The win on Wednesday puts West End at 3-0 so far at the regional tournament, which sees the top 3 teams advance to the playoff portion on Friday. And Hess is more than happy to see West End sitting undefeated after two days.
“Any time you are 3-0 in any tournament you have to be happy, but we know what the next couple days will bring us and the kids have to be ready to go each time out on the field,” Hess said. “It would be nice to get the one seed because that would put us right in the championship game and we would stay away from the No. 2 vs. No. 3 seed semifinal Friday at 11 a.m. and not have to play a doubleheader.”
