Williamsport brings back 11 state qualifiers in swimming

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Evan Weaver competes for Williamsport in the boys 200 medley relay during a high school swim tri-meet at Williamsport on Tuesday. Weaver is one of 11 state qualifiers back for Williamsport this winter.

If you look at Williamsport’s roster, you’ll see not only a large amount of swimmers, but a majority of which have state experience.

Evan Summers. Cooper Allmaras. Brady Ross. Evan Weaver. Kyla Becker. Aviya Halstead. Kiley Persun. Addison Hill. Miley Johnson. Clover Lindsay. Allie Eberhart.

All 11 of them were state qualifiers last year and Summers had the most outstanding finish for the Millionaires. Summers stood on the podium at states as a third-place finisher in the 100 breast. It was Williamsport’s first top-3 finish at the state meet since Chip Frazier did so in 1976.

“I know that he is very confident as I am. I know he was very close last year and I know that he is very determined to improve this year,” Williamsport coach Brett Johnson said. “He has been working hard over the offseason and I look for him to do very well again this season.”

Summers is a junior and earning a medal at Bucknell for the PIAA swimming and diving championships is a huge boost for him. And Johnson has seen him and others improve from last winter to now.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Aviya Halstead competes for Williamsport in the girls 200 free during a high school swim tri-meet at Williamsport on Tuesday. Halstead is one of 11 swimmers from Williamsport who went to staets last year.

“Evan has worked very hard in the offseason,” Johnson said. “He was involved with long course over the summer to help him improve even more. He is very driven to do well and has some goals that he is looking to make reality this year. I think that if he continues to work hard he is going to be very happy this season.”

In addition to Williamsport’s 11 state qualifiers returning, Williamsport also has four swimmers who had experience at districts in Lynnae Campbell, Dylana Richards and Olivia Godfrey.

“I think both the boys and girls have a great opportunity to go out and win both the league and districts,” Johnson noted. “They have a lot of work to do and a lot of meets to get through, but I think everything will go great. On an individual basis, what I have been seeing so far in practice is making me excited. A lot of the team looks really good right now.”

Williamsport had numerous relay teams have success at the District 2-4 Class AAAA swimming championships, including a few take home gold medals. That would be Halstead and Persun who won gold in the girls 200 free alongside Naomie Lee and Kendall Cohick and Summers, Ross and Allmaras who each won two boys relay gold medals last year.

This year Johnson expects more relay team success.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Brady Ross competes for Williamsport in the boys 200 free during a high school swim tri-meet at Williamsport on Tuesday. Ross is one of 11 state qualifiers back for Williamsport.

“I think the relays have great potential to be a big plus this year,” Johnson said. “We are definitely replacing some key parts for both the boys and girls. Once we figure out who is going to fill the spots, we will be fine.”

Williamsport saw Ross win gold in the 500 free last year at districts and set a PR by 12 seconds. Allmaras claimed district gold in the 100 back with a PR, Ross took silver in the 50 free at districts and Allmaras was a third-place finisher.

Persun was a bronze medalist in the 500 free at districts while Richards took fourth and Johnson finished fifth. In diving competition, Clover took gold and Eberhart took silver. Becker was a gold medalist in the 100 breast at districts as well.

All in all, the Millionaires have a ton of valuable experience and depth on the roster.

“They are willing to work hard and are showing that they are all determined to do well. I feel like they all have the same goals, both the boys and girls,” Johnson said. “I am seeing in these first few weeks that they are really supporting one another. I think that all of them working together as a team are going to help with some very good individual performances. I think we are going to have a great season.”
