Bucktail’s Sockman grabs 22 rebounds in win vs. Millville
KEVIN RAUCH/Special to the Sun-Gazette Bucktail’s Kendall Wagner’s double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, along with Eva Sockman’s (right) 22 rebounds led the Bucks to a 36-22 win over Millville on Friday evening in Farwell.
Bucktail moved within a game of getting back to .500 on the season after a dominant performance over Millville Friday evening as the Bucks knocked off the Quakers, 36-22, in a game that was never in question.
Three Bucks put up dominant statistical performances led by a double-double from senior Kendall Wagner that included 15 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 blocks. Wagner’s freshman sister Kelsie matched her big sisters 15 points while senior Eva Sockman was a monster on the boards grabbing 22 rebounds while scoring five points and swatting away five shot attempts by the visiting team.
“It was a good win, we needed that, it was a tough week for us” Bucktail coach Sueellen Wagner said following the win. “We couldn’t get things going against Meadowbrook on Monday, then we lost a tough one to Benton on Tuesday, so it was great to get everyone shooting and getting our confidence back”.
The Bucks led 7-0 with 1:30 remaining in the first quarter when perhaps the defining sequence of the game occurred.
Lydia Manning put her team on the board with a three-point shot to cut the lead to 7-3. On the ensuing play Sockman picked up a block on a short jumper, grabbed the rebound and found a streaking Kelsie Wagner who quickly put the Bucktail back up 12-3 before Millville could even celebrate their first bucket of the night.
“There was no JV game tonight, so it was nice to be able to get everyone in. Kendall, Eva and Kelsie moved the ball around and helped everyone get some shooting,” said Wagner. “It was amazing what Kendall did on the boards, it was an aggressive game, and she never allowed them to get any momentum or really any second shots.”
Bucktail improved to 5-6 with the win while Quakers fell to 2-8. The Bucks will be home again on Monday with a tough Sullivan County squad heading into Farwell.
