Local roundup: Montgomery’s Bennett scores career-high 41 in win

Parker Bennett erupted for a career-high 41 points, becoming the area’s second 40-point scorer this season, as Montgomery routed Northwest, 79-41. Bennett scored 18 third quarter points and set an early tone with 12 during a 25-4 first quarter run.

That 18-point flurry was part of a 31 point third quarter for the Red Raiders who imposed the mercy rule there. James Godley scored a career-high 10 points and Damaj Stewart Williams also had 10, while Jace Hanford added nine.

Jersey Shore fell shy at home against Shamokin, 66-53. Khani McCray scored 14 for the Bulldogs while Jacob Lorson scored 11 and Landon Lathan chipped in 10.

Daiton Thompson scored 28 points in three quarters and St. John Neumann won its second straight game, thumping Benton, 76-34. The Knights scored 74 points in the first three quarters with Legend Dillard going for 18 and Jahki Brister 16. They both also did all their damage in the first three quarters. Neumann built a 53-20 halftime lead and topped 70 points for a second consecutive game.

Five players scored at least seven points and four reached double figures as Loyalsock won at Hughesville, 69-37. Brecken Gusick matched for game-high honors with 17 points, Braydon Cioffi scored 15, Saoj Jones 11, Issac Blackwell 10 and Ronnie Emery seven. The Lancers drained nine 3-pointers as well.

Gavin Knarr scored 17 for Hughesville and made three steals, Alex Schultz had eight rebounds and Evan Mackenzie eight points with five boards.

Warrior Run became the first area team to clinch a playoff spot, playing stifling defense and defeating Mifflinburg, 55-27 in a battle of last year’s HAC-III co-champions. The Defenders (11-1, 3-0) did not allow a first quarter point and built a 37-12 halftime lead.

James Keifer and Landon Polcyn both scored 15 points with Polcyn adding four assists. Aiden McKee grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked seven shots as Warrior Run won its fourth straight game.

South Williamsprot beat CMVT, 64-35, as a trio of Mounties were in double figures. Levi Butler scored 16 points for South Williamsport, Bobby Regan had 13 and Andrew Walter added 10.

Sullivan County defeated Muncy, 60-53, to hand the Indians their fourth loss of the year. Tucker Blasi led the Griffins with 19 points. Muncy was led by Dominic Guardini’s 25 and Jaxton Frantz’s 14.

A 19-point fourth quarter helped Sullivan County secure the home win.

North Penn-Mansfield defeated rival North Penn-Liberty, 52-37. Jason Harer scored 21 for Mansfield while Andy Hermansen added 12. Liberty was led by Evan McTish’s 13 points.

• Williamsport’s girls basketball team came up just shy against Tyrone, falling 31-27. The Millionaires held a 27-24 lead going into the fourth quarter, but Williamsport couldn’t score in the final stanza en route to the loss.

Mikayla Cerami led Williamsport wtih nine points and both Laylah Martin and Jaelynn Helmrich scored six each.

South Williamsport fell to Northeast Bradford, 48-37. The Mounties had a trio of players record double figures, however, in Abigail Holbrook’s 14, Ella Moore’s 12 and Carly Quimby’s 11.

North Penn-Mansfield defeated Northern Potter in a close game, 55-54. Kameron Lightner had a 27-point, 16-rebound double-double with three steals. Maddy McNamara scored 11 with four assists and three steals as Elaina Shaw had five points, six rebounds, six steals and two assists.

A 39-point second half propelled North Penn-Mansfield to an exciting 55-54 win over Northern Potter. Kameron Lightner had a monster game with 27 points while Maddie McNamara scored 11.

Cowanesque Valley cruised past Galeton, 38-18, thanks to holding the Tigers to just four first-half points. Starr Ordway scored 18 points to lead the Indians and Jaylynn Anderson added nine.

• The Mansfield University women’s basketball team competed in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action against Millersville University, falling 69-64. Katie Sheeler led the red and black with five rebounds and 32 points notching her 1,000th career point, where she is the 19th player in program history to accomplish.

Jenna Kasmierski backed her up with 11 points and six rebounds. The Mounties (2-12, 0-7 PSAC) got the ball rolling early in the first quarter going with a 10-4 run on the hot hand of Sheeler.

Millersville (6-7, 2-5 PSAC) answered the pressure with a sequence of their own to end the quarter down, 17-12.

• The Mansfield University men’s basketball team competed in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action against Millersville University, with the Marauders taking the win 82-62.

Sterling Scott tied his career high points collecting 25, four steals, five rebounds and one assist. JuJu Pagan and Nasir Brown added 11 points each.

The Mountaineers (1-12, 0-7 PSAC) traded baskets early as Scott set the tone by attacking the rim and knocking down shots from the perimeter. Scott scored consistently in the opening half, helping the Mounties stay within striking distance, while Brown and Pagan added timely baskets to keep them close through the first 20 minutes.

• Penn College’s wrestling team posted a 2-1 record at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Duals on Saturday, besting Pitt-Bradford 37-13 and Alfred State 32-18, and losing to Penn State Behrend 24-20. The Wildcats are now 5-5 overall and end 3-1 in the conference, having beaten Penn State Altoona earlier in the season.

Three Penn College wrestlers, Blake Dergham at 133 pounds, Chase Shaner at 141 and Carter Davis at 165, finished the day with 3-0 records. Shaner decked his Pitt-Bradford opponent in 18 seconds. Also, Harris Keares at 125, David M’Balla at 157, and Nic Brotzman at 285 all ended 2-1, with Brotzman recording two falls.

Against Pitt-Bradford, Keares started the match with a tech fall at 125 pounds, Dergham topped his opponent, 7-0 and Shaner picked up an 18-second fall to give the Wildcats 14-0 lead. After a Panthers decision at 149, M’Balla earned a pin in 3:29 at 157 pounds and Davis posted a tech fall in 4:25 at 165. Cole Shupp (184) and Tyler Prince (197) both collected forfeits.

Against Penn State Behrend, the Lions and Wildcats traded decisions at 125 and 133 pounds before Shaner posted a 17-5 major decision over Cole Neil, ranked fifth in NWCA Region 2. M’Balla earned a 16-6 major decision and Davis grinded out a 7-4 victory over Steffan Lynch for a 14-9 lead but the Lions rattled off two falls and an overtime win at 184 to seal the victory despite a Brotzman pin at 285.
