Warriors fall at buzzer against Susquehanna in men’s basketball
In a back-and-forth game with 10 lead changes and eight ties, a last-second shot fell off the side of the rim to help Susquehanna University escape Lamade Gym with an 85-84 Landmark Conference win over the Lycoming College men’s basketball team on Wednesday.
Billy Anderson hit a game-winning layup inside with 12 seconds left for the River Hawks (8-4 overall, 4-1 Landmark). The Warriors (4-8 overall, 0-5 Landmark) took a pair of timeouts on the ensuing possession and got a good look on a hook shot as time expired, but it hit the back rim and fell off.
Sophomore Princeton Layton posted 25 points and six rebounds, junior Hayden Pardoe, a Central Mountain graduate, added 21 points, six rebounds and two steals, senior Isaiah Valentine added 15 points and two assists and freshman Noa’Sosa Friedman posted 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
The River Hawks came back from a nine-point deficit with 6:31 left to take a 79-78 lead with 3:17 left, but the Warriors responded in the final moments, which featured two ties and two lead changes. The Warriors took the lead on a pair of free throws from Pardoe with 1:20 left before Brandon Lavitt hit a free throw with 56 seconds left to make it a one-point game and after a missed jumper by the Warriors, Anderson’s layup gave the River Hawks the final lead.
Susquehanna opened the second half on an 20-14 run to lead 54-48 with 14:18 left, but the Warriors hit a pair of 3-pointers, one from Valentine and one from Layton to tie the game with 13:48 left, igniting a 28-13 run which gave Lycoming a 76-67 lead with 6:31 left. The River Hawks scored the next eight points to close within a point, where the lead stood with 3:47 left.
The River Hawks led by nine at 29-20 with 6:02 left in the first half when the Warriors posted an 11-point run, started on a 3-pointer from Pardoe and finished on three free throws from Layton, giving Lycoming a 31-29 lead with 3:20 left. The River Hawks scored the next five points before the Warriors closed the period with five of their own, with Layton hitting a 3-pointer in transition to take a 36-34 lead at the break.
Jackson Van Wagener and Emezie Egeonu led the River Hawks with 17 points a piece and Lavitt and Anderson each had 15 points.
The Warriors are back in action on Sunday when they host Moravian University in Landmark Conference play at 1 p.m., in Lamade Gym.
