Lindsay scores all 7s on final dive to win diving competition vs. Danville

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport's Clover Lindsay competes in the Diving portion of a high school swim tri-meet with Wellsboro and Danville at Williamsport on Tuesday.

The loudest applause on Tuesday evening at Williamsport High School came when Clover Lindsay attempted her sixth and final dive. The Millionaire hit the board as perfectly as you could, got great height on her attempt, and hit the water great.

It resulted in the judges giving her three 7s.

A deserving applause for sure.

Lindsay put together another solid performance overall in the 1-meter diving competition on Tuesday as her and teammate Allie Eberhart competed against a trio of Danville girl divers.

That third and final dive with triple 7s helped secure a win for Lindsay in the diving competition with a score of 215.50. Danville standout Izzy Marks took second with a score of 181.45, Williamsport’s Allie Eberhart was third with a score of 170.20, Danville’s Leah Hasenbalg took fourth with a score of 144.90 and Danville’s Adriana Sanchez took fifth with a score of 105.20. Lindsay’s triple 7 score came when attempting a reverse dive, pike position on her sixth and final attempt. Lindsay scored all 6s on her fifth attempt performing a back dive, one-and-one-half somersault, half twist, free position.

Her first attempt — a forward dive, one-and-one-half somersault, pike position — saw the judges award her scores of 5 1/2, 6 1/2 and 7.

Lindsay was one of just two divers Tuesday to score a 7 in a dive. The other was Marks, who scored a 6 1/2, 7 and 7 on her third attempted dive of an inward dive, pike position.

Marks had solid scores throughout the evening for the Ironmen. She recorded a 6, 6 and 6 1/2 on her first dive attempt of a forward dive, one-and-one-half somersault, pike position, and followed with scores of 5, 4 1/2 and 5 on her second dive attempting a reverse dive, one somersault, tuck position.

“She’s so athletic. She started as a swimmer and wanted to try diving and had this natural grace and was very coachable. It just worked out that it made sense for her to keep trying because it’s an important part of team scoring,” Danville coach Danielle Sticklin said. “For us, she was district champion last year, went to states, so we’re hoping it was great for her to go against the Williamsport divers. She knew they were good and had to fight some of those nerves. That’s what got her at states last year because she hadn’t been up against a lot of talented people all at once. So it was really great to have this opportunity against those girls.”

Marks scored a 5, 5 1/2, 5 1/2 attempting a back dive, one-and-one-half somersault, tuck position on her fourth attempt and, on her fifth attempt, scored a 4 1/2, 4 1/2, 4 1/2 doing a back dive, one somersault, one-and-one-half twist, free position.

Marks scored a 4 1/2, 5 and 5 1/2 on her final attempt performing an inward dive, one-and-one-half somersault, tuck position.

On Lindsay’s fourth attempt, she scored three 5 1/2s doing a forward dive, one somersault, one-and-one-half twist, free position.

Eberhart performed well for the Millionaires too on Tuesday.

Eberhart had a great start when she scored a 6, 6 and 6 1/2 attempting a forward dive, one-and-one-half somersault, pike position and two dives later, scored a 5 1/2, 6, and 5 1/2 doing a forward dive, one somersault, one twist, free position.

She scored a 5 1/2, 6 1/2 and 6 1/2 on her sixth attempt and on her fifth — a back dive, straight position — she netted a 5 1/2, 5 1/2 and 5. Her fourth dive of an inward dive, one somersault, tuck position scored her a 4 1/2, 5 and 5 and she scored a 4, 4 and 3 1/2 doing a forward dive, two somersault, pike position attempt on her second attempt.
